The new Rapido HO GP38's are in, and they appear to look great and run great. Not exactly in my 1973 era (they were purchased by BN from Conrail in the 1980's), but they come with working rotary beacons and a form of current keepers, so we will probably run them for a while anyway, until we get around to renumbering them to please the sticklers (you know who you are!).

Here's a sneak peek at a new diesel that's coming to our narrow gauge extension of the D&RGW to Everett, WA. Brian Elchlepp has been working on this re-gauged Alco diesel, which you can see he did an amazing job of painting, lettering and weathering on. As soon as he perfects the drive train we'll show you this engine in action! In the meantime, watch an earlier pre-painted version of this engine taking a test run, back in June, here: https://youtu.be/c0KR49MyhIk

@asterbob370 told me yesterday (and he's a retired railroader from the BN) that the way that I switched the tank cars in my "Part 31" video ( https://youtu.be/Cq07M-3HuAI ) was correct, despite my rambling insecurity in my narration at the 7:30 point in that video. He said that if you have a cut of cars out on the mainline, you have to haved pumped up the air in them, so if you then want to remove cars from the cut to spot, you would always unhitch the cars furthest from the engine first, so you could keep the air pressure up in the train line for the rest of the cars by closing off the angle cock at the point where you uncoupled them. This is great to learn, and now in future videos I'll be able to comment on which cars have the air brake system charged up and which ones are loose. I never fail to seem to like making something simple into something more complex, it seems! :)

One of my very first operations videos is still one of the best, and fun to watch. It shows how to set up a consist in NCE and then runs a train with two BN RS-3's up the grade to Burlington. If you haven't seen it recently, check it out! https://youtu.be/EIe49RXn9ck

Progress continues! With advice from Brian Elchlepp, I was able to wire up Motown Models "Nano LED's" to the dual headlights and the rotating beacon on an Athearn Genesis GP9. The model had a factory-installed Tsunami2 DCC sound decoder with incandescent bulbs running at 1.5V, but Brian showed me an unlabeled pad on the decoder that outputs 15V, so I hooked the LED's up to that and it appears to have worked. Looking forward to upgrading many more of the older Athearn units. There is a similar pad on the Tsunami1 decoders as well. Yay!

It's hard to comprehend how much a good backdrop improves the realism of a model railroad scene. We're in the early stages of installing a couple of downtown Seattle backdrops that I had printed on styrene sheet, and with only one of four sections in place, the effect is spellbinding! Look forward to more progress on this soon! :)

Here are some images from my latest obsession with the Rapido "short barrel ore cars" in N scale. Based on my "three week rule" not to get sidetracked for more than three weeks on anything, this is perhaps the end of the obsession. The long-form (horizontal) video is here: https://youtu.be/UsDcbVsb2as

Here's a new way to use ore jennies!! We had your typical kitchen sink drain plug-up incident yesterday, and by the time I got it under control, I noticed that a bit of water had leaked on the floor and down the drain pipe above the Burlington yard in the basement. I wanted to both contain any further water and allow the wet track and ballast to dry out, so I placed a yellow plastic trash can on top of two nearby HO ore jennies. Mission accomplished! Another example of "reality model railroading", so when you see my next video you'll understand what that odd photo at the end is about. Here's a link to the video: https://youtu.be/9dFON4KkJzg

Here's an amazing shot of Brian Elchlepp's F45 crossing the steel trestle here, coming down from Skykomish to Delta. A real beauty!

Things happen. Check out how one of the engines in this two-engine consist hesitated a couple of times over switch frogs. It turned out the truck sideframe wire had come unsoldered from the connection to the decoder. Will fix this soon! youtube.com/shorts/F7RB6qgZTNg

The Burrlington Northern, Seattle Region, is an HO model railroad set in 1973, based on the operations of the Burington Northern, MILW and UP railroads in the region from Seattle north to Bellingham and east to Skykomish, WA. It also includes the fictitious "Troublesome Creek Railway", a narrow gage road which represents the ultimate expansion of the D&RGW west to interchange with the BN at Everett, WA. This channel features video clips from both standard and narrow gage operations on the HO layout, as well as my N scale layout and other people's layouts that I've visited. It also includes footage of the BNSF railroad taken around Seattle, and a few random music and other kinds of performances.
