But a special shout out to âŞ@DanVegaâŹ. When we met back in 2020, and I had little more than 300 subs, he filled me with inspiration that Iâve since poured into this channel. Watching his dedication to all things Spring and crossing the 50,000 mark continues to inspire.

We all are given special gifts. Often time these gifts can sustain us, help us provide for our families and for others.
And sometimes, those gifts can serve a much deeper purpose.
This past weekend, I went down to visit my parents, who are now in the late 80s. I brought half of my YouTube studio gear with me. Cameras. Microphones. Tripods. Lights.
And I let my mother tell her story.
She has amazing memories back to before WWII. Times she spent with her grandparents, who were married in a state before that state joined the Union.
All my skills I've learned over the past five years at shooting and producing videos for you were now able to quickly and efficiently gather something greater than myself.
A recent reader of my latest book heralded my comments in the book that as SW engineers we carry certain duties to the profession. While I appreciate that reader's words, this weekend I felt that I (we) carry an even higher duty to capture the past and preserve it for the future.
I have just transferred all the gathered video and stills onto my RAID array and am now importing it into a Final Cut Pro project where I can splice it together.
My father, since before I was born, has shot Super 8 films and taken literally thousands of photos. And I feel that I have now taken up a new mantle to carry on this duty to capture such memories in today's day and age.
And as my parents have invested much in me to bring me to where I am today, I intend to invest hopefully as much into my own children, so that someday they can carry the torch forward.
This is what we all carry in some shape or form. A duty to serve those around us with the talents and gifts granted to us.
It may start with your job and your daily tasks. But don't hesitate to help a friend, a family member, or a complete stranger when the opportunity presents itself.
I also had the chance to chat this weekend with a family friend I've known since I was quite young. He's also a retired professor and someone I worked with during grad school. He's also a pro coder.
He shaped much of whom I am today career-wise. He even got me in amateur radio.
When I saw him yesterday, one thing he said stuck with me. He said, "I've got a story for you. All I have now are stories."
He said those words in a self-deprecating manner. But I realized in that moment, that if I were to someday reach his age, I too hoped that I would be filled with stories. Because stories are what really matter.
Our interactions with each other are what weave all of humanity together. That's what is most important above all. Stories.
Do you have any stories? And what are you doing to make more of them?

As a pro coder, itâs ALWAYS valuable to collect skills
âIs it okay to study Java?â Yes!
âIs JavaScript good to learn?â Yes!
âIs there any benefit in learning CSS?â Yes yes yes.
The answer is almost always an emphatic yes.
Years ago, I dubbed myself a âJavaScript Padawanâ. Thatâs because several years ago, as part of a side role on the Spring team, I was able to work with John Hann and Brian Cavalier, two JavaScript masters who taught me MUCH.
A skillset I have used rarely has once again come back to serve me today!
I am investigating the usage of Asciidoctor.js + reveal.js in a Node.js environment for some top-dollar content creation, and Iâm the one with The Knowledgeâ˘.
Youâll never know when a skill will serve you.
Donât hesitate to keep on learning. âArrival syndromeâ, the feeling that you have learned all that there is, is insidious and will tell you âDonât worry about that. You wonât need that.â
EVEN IF you never leverage that new skill EVER, the very process of learning it can enhance your ability to learn, your ability to see how that product influenced other products you DO use and obtain deeper understanding, and your ability to keep on growing, a vital thing we must all pursue.
But in this industry, things often come full circle. Opportunities open up and the one with the skill may be able to offer a solution where none was found before.
Be willing to learn that toolkit or that technology. In todayâs searchable/AI-empowered world, when you seek out the ref docs someday in the future, it will be a snap to find them and get kicking.
I may have dropped âJavaScript Padawanâ from my tagline, but I will always treasure having learned that crazy language and being able to use it to serve my team. I will always feel like Iâm a JavaScript Padawan thanks to those two guys.
Now what skill are YOU being offered a chance to go and learn? Do it!
