I have a few messages about " Short Eats" and what it means, well if you are in the UK this is the Sri Lankan version of Greggs.

Sri Lanka's Delicious Short Eats
When exploring the culinary landscape of Sri Lanka, one delightful aspect that stands out is the vibrant tradition of "short eats." This term refers to the small snacks that are as varied as they are delicious, and they are a vital part of daily life in this beautiful island nation. Whether you’re wandering the bustling streets of Colombo or relaxing in a small coastal village, these bite-sized treats are always within reach.
So, what exactly are short eats? Picture a bustling roadside stall, the enticing aroma of freshly made snacks wafting through the air. You might encounter an array of options, ranging from crispy fish rolls to savory egg rolls, samosas (vegetable, chicken, or beef), and everything in between. Each snack is a flavor-packed little parcel, perfect for satisfying your appetite while on the go.
What makes short eats particularly appealing is their affordability. Many of these snacks are available for just a small sum, making them a fantastic option for budget-conscious travelers and locals alike. You can grab a hearty snack for less than the cost of a cup of coffee, allowing you to indulge in the rich flavors of Sri Lankan cuisine without breaking the bank.
One of the most popular short eats is the samosa, a savory pastry filled with an array of ingredients. Veggie samosas often brim with spiced potatoes, peas, and carrots, while chicken and beef options offer a hearty twist on this beloved classic. Each bite unveils a burst of flavor that showcases the island's signature spices.
Another fan-favorite is the fish roll, a crispy delight with a lightly spiced tuna filling wrapped in a golden-brown crust. As you savor the crunchy exterior, the soft, flavorsome filling is sure to transport your taste buds straight to the shores of Sri Lanka.
Moreover, short eats are not just limited to fried snacks. You'll also find healthier options, like fresh fruit cuts or steamed dumplings filled with vegetables. This variety makes short eats an excellent choice for any palate, whether you prefer something indulgent or light.
What’s truly remarkable about short eats is their omnipresence. You’ll find them sold at street food vendors, in small roadside cafes, and even in larger eateries. It’s common for friends and families to gather, enjoying a shared platter of snacks while chatting and laughing, embodying the island's warm, communal spirit.
In a nutshell, short eats are more than just food; they represent the heart and soul of Sri Lankan culinary culture. They bring people together and provide a tasty, convenient way to experience local flavors. So, the next time you find yourself in this enchanting country, make sure to stop by a nearby stall and treat yourself to a few short eats. Not only will you fill your stomach, but you'll also take a delicious bite out of Sri Lanka's rich culinary heritage!

Thursday 31st Oct is Diwali so a very happy Diwali to you all.
Diwali, also called Deepavali, is the Hindu festival of lights, with variations celebrated in other Indian religions such as Jainism and Sikhism. It symbolises the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance".
