Consumption patterns show that Indiaā€™s urban middle class is suffering and we believe that there are 3 reasons for this:
(a) In offices & factories, technology is replacing humans in jobs entailing routine work;
(b) The Indian economy is in the early stages of a cyclical economic downturn; and
(c) Household balance sheets in India appear to be in their worst shape in half a century.

Whilst the Indian economy should emerge from its cyclical downturn in a few quarters, the potency of the other two factors could likely make things worse before they get better.

When we think of equity investing in the US, technology stocks often come to mind. However, there are many companies flying under the radar that boast exceptional businesses with competitive moats that are hard to replicate for competitors. One such company in our Global Compounders Portfolio is 'Copart'.

Founded in 1982 by Willis Johnson, who came from a humble background and dropped out of high school, Copart pioneered the e-auction marketplace for salvaged vehicles. Today, it operates as a powerful two-sided network, connecting buyers and sellers of salvaged cars through its online auction platform.

Discover how Copart continues to disrupt the industry and unlock value in ways most people donā€™t realize on the latest episode of our podcast series, Coffee and Investing with Saurabh Mukherjea. šŸš—šŸ’¼

šŸ“š Our latest book, Behold The Leviathan, has become a national bestseller, earning praise not just from imminent thought leaders across industries but also from bibliophiles as well.

However, there was one facet that was missingā€“ the authors, Saurabh Mukherjea and Nandita Rajhansa, candidly discussing the book, their journey of writing it and their learnings through the book amongst many more.

In the latest episode of our podcast series, ā€˜Coffee and Investing with Saurabh Mukherjeaā€™, we do just that!

Nandita quizzes Saurabh and makes him open up about the making of this bestselling book, the unconventional ways in which India is changing, why economists aren't always businesspeople, and why your holiday destination shouldnā€™t necessarily be your workplace. šŸŽ™ļø

As we had discussed in our previous newsletter, India is witnessing a growing prominence of companies who are plays on intellectual rather than physical assets. Smart companies are using intangible assets to build moats around their businesses which are difficult for competitors to replicate.

Watch our latest #MarcellusWebinar where our Fund Manager, Rakshit Ranjan dives deep into these aspects and helps us understand how CCP is a play on ā€˜Capitalism Without Capitalā€™!

The Big Are Getting Bigger and the Southern Ascendancy

Over the last 10 years, whilst India Incā€™s PAT has grown at 17% p.a. on an average, the median Indian companyā€™s PAT has grown at 15%. Delving into this gap between the average vs the median gave us two findings:

(a) larger companies have grown profits faster than smaller companies; and

(b) southern Indian companiesā€™ profits have grown MUCH faster than companies from the rest of the country.

As we have explained in our bestselling book, ā€˜Behold the Leviathan: The Unusual Rise of Modern Indiaā€™, these two facts have become a central feature in Indiaā€™s economic evolution.

In recent years, India has seen earnings growth far outpace growth in physical assets. This shift reflects a larger global trend identified by Jonathan Haskel & Stian Westlake in their book, 'Capitalism Without Capital'. They argue that over the past 40 years, businesses have increasingly invested in intangible assetsā€”such as proprietary data, software, and brand valueā€”rather than physical infrastructure.

These intangibles offer unique advantages:
1. Scalability: Once developed, they can be expanded indefinitely.
2. Sunk Costs: They often involve irreversible investments that yield long-term returns.
3. Spillovers: Benefits are often shared across industries, amplifying their value.
4. Synergies: Combining intangibles creates greater value than the sum of their parts.

This shift is reshaping Indiaā€™s economy as well. In our Consistent Compounders Portfolio, companies like Narayana Hrudayalaya, Trent, and CMS Infosystems, Astral, Tube Investments are building competitive moats around intangible assets and in turn building a flywheel effect that is difficult for competitors to replicate.

In our latest #MarcellusNewsletter, we explore how this trend is impacting both corporate strategy and our portfolio. Read more using the link below:
