Consumption patterns show that Indiaās urban middle class is suffering and we believe that there are 3 reasons for this:
(a) In offices & factories, technology is replacing humans in jobs entailing routine work;
(b) The Indian economy is in the early stages of a cyclical economic downturn; and
(c) Household balance sheets in India appear to be in their worst shape in half a century.
Whilst the Indian economy should emerge from its cyclical downturn in a few quarters, the potency of the other two factors could likely make things worse before they get better.

As we had discussed in our previous newsletter, India is witnessing a growing prominence of companies who are plays on intellectual rather than physical assets. Smart companies are using intangible assets to build moats around their businesses which are difficult for competitors to replicate.

The Big Are Getting Bigger and the Southern Ascendancy
Over the last 10 years, whilst India Incās PAT has grown at 17% p.a. on an average, the median Indian companyās PAT has grown at 15%. Delving into this gap between the average vs the median gave us two findings:
(a) larger companies have grown profits faster than smaller companies; and
(b) southern Indian companiesā profits have grown MUCH faster than companies from the rest of the country.
As we have explained in our bestselling book, āBehold the Leviathan: The Unusual Rise of Modern Indiaā, these two facts have become a central feature in Indiaās economic evolution.

In recent years, India has seen earnings growth far outpace growth in physical assets. This shift reflects a larger global trend identified by Jonathan Haskel & Stian Westlake in their book, 'Capitalism Without Capital'. They argue that over the past 40 years, businesses have increasingly invested in intangible assetsāsuch as proprietary data, software, and brand valueārather than physical infrastructure.
These intangibles offer unique advantages:
1. Scalability: Once developed, they can be expanded indefinitely.
2. Sunk Costs: They often involve irreversible investments that yield long-term returns.
3. Spillovers: Benefits are often shared across industries, amplifying their value.
4. Synergies: Combining intangibles creates greater value than the sum of their parts.
This shift is reshaping Indiaās economy as well. In our Consistent Compounders Portfolio, companies like Narayana Hrudayalaya, Trent, and CMS Infosystems, Astral, Tube Investments are building competitive moats around intangible assets and in turn building a flywheel effect that is difficult for competitors to replicate.
In our latest #MarcellusNewsletter, we explore how this trend is impacting both corporate strategy and our portfolio. Read more using the link below:
