Daily Tip
3 hacks for mixing perfect low end:
1. Get it right at the source.
The key is to choose and record sounds that āmix wellā together from the startā¦
I like to think of the low end in three frequency ranges or āzonesā...
(These are rough estimates, and totally flexible):
Zone 1: 20hz-50hz
Zone 2: 50hz-80hz
Zone 3: 80hz-120hz
For example, if the lows from my kick sit in zone 2, my bass can sit in zone 1 or zone 3ā¦
Or, if the lows from my sub is in zone 1, I have zones 2 and 3 open for my kick and my bassā¦
This gives each low end element its own space in the mix before you even start mixing.
2. Hone your zones.
I like to use EQ to create further ātightnessā in the low end so I donāt end up with a muddy mixā¦
I use high pass filters to cut out the lows from any competing elementsā¦
For example, if there's a rumble in the guitar bleeding into my zones, I might roll off up to 80-100hzā¦
Or, if thereās unwanted lows from the vocal, Iāll roll that off as wellā¦
All in the service of reserving that low end area of the frequency spectrum for the instruments that need it most.
3. Low-pass the mix bus.
Try this:
First, add an EQ to the mix busā¦
Then, low pass it down to 200hzā¦
This little trick can help you focus on your low end relationships by temporarily excluding all the high end informationā¦
You just set up this EQ, turn it on, and flip back and forth between your reference tracks and your mix to check the low endā¦
When youāre done, you just turn the EQ off and carry on with your mix.
I hope these low end mixing tips serve you well.
Good luck!
