At a memorial held on Saturday, August 10, to celebrate Elleni Centime Zeleke, I attended and heard Semhal Meles Zenawi share the following profound and courageous thoughts. She will appear on UMD Media soon to elaborate further on these ideas. In the meantime, if you haven't already, be sure to subscribe to UMD Media's channel. youtube.com/UMDMedia
"I believe it would betray Centime's memory, as I remember it, if I didn't express that there seems to be, based on the testimonies in this room, a reluctance to engage with the developments and evolution in Centime's thinking, especially influenced by the war in Tigray or the genocide in Tigray. It feels as though one reason people avoid engaging with the changes in her work—why we repeatedly return to the student movement and Ethiopian In Theory rather than, say, A Jewel In The Ear—is a lack of moral courage, a desire to sanitize Centime’s legacy to feel better about our own lack of the moral courage she possessed. What happened? I heard Semir’s comments about her approach to social studies, which were evident in Ethiopian In Theory. I think we were both present at the talk Netanet organized, likely in November. During that talk, Centime discussed a letter she had helped organize, signed by many African academics, calling for peace. She saw that letter as a proposal for a different kind of sovereignty, contrasting with the type presented by, if I recall correctly, Semeneh and others in response to Centime’s letter—a group of civil society organizations wrote their own letter in response. Both of these are political acts. When Centime states that genocide is wrong, she is making a profound statement about the ethical aspirations of a society, both locally and globally. I'm uncomfortable with the whitewashing happening here, and I believe Centime wouldn’t stand for it. The way to address the lack of moral courage that I've personally witnessed in many of you here isn't to whitewash Centime's legacy, but to aspire to be as courageous, as brave, and as clear about your positions as she was. And maybe even to dance and enjoy life like Centime did. That’s all I have to say. Thank you."

At a press conference today, TPLF Chairman Debretsion Gebremichael explained the party's rejection of the new registration certificate issued by the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) at the end of last week. He stated that the Pretoria Agreement, signed by both the TPLF and the Ethiopian federal government, was intended to provide political recognition to both parties. The next step was to obtain legal recognition for the TPLF.

Debretsion highlighted that the government had suggested new or revised legislation to grant this legal recognition. However, after reviewing the new legislation with external legal advisors, the TPLF leadership concluded that it was not the appropriate route for the party. This conclusion was confirmed at a Central Committee meeting, leading the TPLF to seek further consultation with the federal government.

The issued certificate, according to Debretsion, effectively cancels the nearly 50-year-old TPLF and registers it as a new entity, implying an admission of the party's involvement in violence and rendering the Pretoria Agreement irrelevant, as the original TPLF that signed the agreement would no longer exist.

Debretsion also mentioned having had multiple meetings with federal authorities, including the Prime Minister and his officials, to discuss the matter.

The final request letter to the NEBE was submitted with the party's bylaws, program, and a list of Central Committee members. However, NEBE requested the list, address, and signatures of the TPLF's Executive Committee members based on the new regulation. Debretsion said that since this request was based on the new legislation, they modified the form to suit their needs and provided the signatures of the Executive Committee members.

However, with Vice Chairman Getachew Reda, also an Executive Committee member, claiming that he did not sign any application list, Debretsion indicated that the signatures were organized by an unnamed Central Committee member and himself, and Getachew Reda was asked to sign which he didn’t with only four signatures finally submitted.

The current Executive Committee members include Debretsion Gebremichael, Fetlework Gebregziabher, Getachew Reda, AddisAlem Balema, and Abraham Tekeste, the latter two having been reinstated a few months ago after being released from federal imprisonment during the war. Executive Committee members Getachew Assefa and Alem Gebrewahid were demoted to CC level during the two months meeting of the CC.

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) Secretariat is proceeding with its controversial Congress on Tuesday, August 12, 2024, despite objections from 14 Central Committee members, including #TPLF’s Vice Chairman and current Tigray Interim Administration President Getachew Reda. UMD Media has confirmed the authenticity of the list with one of the Central Committee members mentioned. These members have declared the Congress illegal, warning it could lead to the party's dissolution. Among those opposing the Congress is the last Speaker of the Tigray Parliament before it was dissolved following the Pretoria Agreement signed in November 2022 between the TPLF and the Ethiopian Federal Government.

Reports indicate that the party's Audit and Control Commission will also be absent from the Congress.

General Tadesse Worede, Vice President of the Tigray Interim Regional Administration (TIRA), announced today that his government will ban all pro- and anti-Congress rallies until further notice. This development comes a day after the TPLF rejected a registration certificate issued by the National Election Board, stating that they had requested reinstatement rather than a new registration.

Given that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government opposed holding the Congress before the party's registration, it is unclear how Addis Ababa will react now that the Congress, which has faced repeated delays over the past few months, is finally set to begin on Tuesday. Reports indicate that zones like South, South Eastern, and other districts near the capital, Mekelle, are not sending representatives to the Congress.

This is the first Congress in the TPLF’s history, as it approaches its 50th anniversary, to be marked by such significant internal and external crises.
