It's an exciting day for manufacturing in Australia, as Orrcon Steel presented the new Unanderra Pipe and Tube Mill to be officially opened by the Hon. Paul Scully, MP (NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces and Member for Wollongong) and Gordon Bradbery AM (Wollongong Lord Mayor, Councillor). See photos of the event below, which give a glimpse of the facility that will provide crucial materials for renewable energy infrastructure.
You'll also see the following presenters and special guests (in alphabetical order), along with attending employees and news media: Jane M. AM (Chair, BlueScope); Lester Kirkwood (National Marketing and Innovation Manager and event MC, Orrcon Steel); Mark Vassella (Managing Director and CEO, BlueScope); Tania Archibald (Chief Executive, Australian Steel Products); and Tony Schreiber (General Manager, Orrcon Steel).
The launch of the mill in Unanderra marks a pinnacle achievement at Orrcon Steel, which joined the BlueScope group of companies 10 years ago. We congratulate the teams who have made this a reality, with a special mention of Brendan McNally (Unanderra Manufacturing Manager), who has worked tirelessly to oversee and ensure the project's completion.
Stay tuned for further updates about this major development!

We are pleased to announce a new collaboration with Australia’s two largest iron ore producers, BHP and Rio Tinto, partnering in our efforts to accelerate the decarbonisation of steelmaking by agreeing to investigate the development of the country’s first ironmaking electric smelting furnace (ESF) pilot plant. Under a new framework agreement, we will consolidate the work that each party has completed to date, leveraging both BHP’s and Rio Tinto’s deep knowledge of Pilbara iron ores with our unique operating experience in ESF technology.
The announcement was made at a press conference at our BlueScope Port Kembla Steelworks in Australia. Speakers included Tania Archibald (Chief Executive BlueScope Australian Steel Products), Simon Trott (Chief Executive Iron Ore, Rio Tinto), Tim Day (Asset President, Western Australia Iron Ore) and the Hon. Stephen Jones MP (Assistant Treasurer and Federal Minister for Financial Services).

Today we were thrilled to host a ceremony at our Western Sydney Service Centre (WSSC) in Erskine Park, New South Wales (NSW), announcing BlueScope Board approval of an AU$415 million investment to build a seventh metal coating line, named MCL7. Subject to NSW Government Planning Approval, this a significant investment in Australian manufacturing that will add 240,000 tonnes per annum of metal coating capacity, alleviating cyclical supply bottlenecks whilst also removing constraints on our growth ambitions for flagship products such as COLORBOND® steel for roofing and walling applications and TRUECORE® steel for light-gauge steel framing.
View a gallery of the tour and ceremony below, which, in addition to employees at WSSC, includes speakers the Hon. Chris Bowen MP (Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy), Mark Vassella (Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer at BlueScope) and Tania Archibald (Chief Executive at BlueScope Australian Steel Products).

Steel plays a critical role in sustainable development. This means developing, manufacturing and selling steel products in a way that facilitates a sustainable future, focusing on continuous improvement, adopting new operating methods and anticipating new products. We look at the impact of a product over its entire life and focus on the four principles of a circular economy: reduce, reuse, remanufacture and recycle.
