Matt is a musician who loves unhealthy food and healthy friendships. Obscure Orchestra is an anti-racist grassroots alt-orchestra led by two-time QMA winner Matt Hsu.
Matt Hsu’s Obscure Orchestra grew from Matt's multi-instrumental offbeat tinkerings to become an exhilaratingly kooky 20+ folk/hop/punk/experimental music gang underpinned by community-minded inclusivity, visibility and gender diversity, comprising of BIPOC, First Nations, disabled, non-binary and trans artists.
With two QMA wins, Matt’s mythos as an inimitable music maker and 'punk-trained composer', is rapidly snowballing, creating otherworldly music that celebrate difference, inclusivity and the liminal spaces between cultures — zig-zagging from kitschy ‘gnome-core’ bedroom pop, second-line jazz, socially conscious hip-hop, found object soundscapes to Studio Ghibli-esque sweeping orchestral arrangements, all imbued with an distinctly ‘Matt Hsu’ sensibility.
