The New Indian Indian Express reports highlighting insights from IIT Madras Prof. Venkatesh Balasubramanian, Head of RGB Labs, IIT Madras, during his address, "AI and Behavioural Change: A Roadmap," at ThinkEdu 2025. He discussed the challenges of developing AI models to reduce road accidents, emphasizing that the biggest obstacle was the lack of reliable data, as biases in data sources often led to inaccurate results. Additionally, restrictions on access to essential hardware limited AI analysis, resulting in flawed conclusions and ethical concerns.
Sharing insights from his collaboration with the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH), Prof. Balasubramanian explained how AI-driven data analytics had helped reduce road accidents in Tamil Nadu. The analysis revealed that a significant number of accidents occurred on December 31, particularly at junctions where high-speed and low-speed roads intersected. Many incidents involved young men who, unable to afford party celebrations, rented bikes and participated in road rallies. Based on these findings, authorities increased surveillance in these areas and introduced safer alternatives to discourage risky behaviour.
While AI had provided valuable insights and guided policy decisions, Prof. Balasubramanian cautioned that influencing human behaviour remained a complex challenge, even with strong data-driven evidence.
