Hi, welcome to Timesmith Dress History!
I am a dress historian specialising in women's clothing during the "long 18th century" - the golden age of the mantua maker! I research how clothing was made and, in doing so, delve deep to understand how mantua makers were trained, what skillsets they developed, and the ins and outs of their everyday trade practices. These are skills and arts that have nearly died out completely - I am keen to play my part in reviving them!
Off screen, I study, practice and teach how mantua makers worked. Here on my YouTube channel, I share what I've learned and show you my efforts to walk in their shoes in reconstructing original 18th century garments.
While appreciating that economic, social and cultural factors in France and England influenced this trade, I am especially interested in how women in Scotland and the Netherlands both adopted and adapted techniques to serve their clients and communities.
Please join me on this journey!
