Iāve found it hard to express the collective trauma, depression, rage, grief and helplessness that myself and so many Sudanese people wrestle with on the daily since April 15, 2023.
I find it hard just BEING of the diaspora, because Iām privileged enough to be spared the most horrid realities of the conflict thatās engulfed my motherland, while so many suffer an unjust fate.
I find it hard to look at these pictures, they remind me of a lifetimeās worth of stories and lessons my parents, as well as the local community, imparted on me. Stories of our traditions, our heritage, our lineage, and our pride lays here in the lands of our forefathers. The sacrifices our elders made to give us a chance at a better life, the selfless acts my parents undertook to insure I would always know where Iām from and the lands to which I must return. To understand that weāve been granted a more bountiful life but all those roads lead home. To aid, to uplift, to use what powers Allah has granted us for the betterment of our people.
Today, I feel like Iāve failed. This same house whose roof we stand upon is no longer ours. It was stormed by rebel militia and taken over, with our family expelled from the premises. The home my father grew up in lays in rubble after an army air strike.
I find it heartbreaking to see my parents and our elders in this way. Lost, disconnected, depressed. The country theyāve served a lifetime uplifting is now one which they cannot even return to. These homes that have bound us to the land for generations have been uprooted and decimated all in the name of war criminals vying for power, funded and supported by various foreign nations with their own interests.
Fuck the politics of it all, I find it hard just to pickup the phone and hear the next horror story. With many of my friends and family amongst the 7 million displaced, and close to 10,000 dead, with no end in sight.
I find it hard to express the feeling of loss, the sorrow of losing our beloved city, losing our beloved country.
