I thought we had a couple of weeks yet, but Lorelai surprised us with a little bull calf this morning! He is a highland cross and absolutely adorable.
We will keep a close eye and make sure the calf gets colostrum and then we will begin milking tonight. Twice a day milking will be our routine for the next several weeks. Mama looks great, but we will be watching her closely to make sure she stays healthy too. Milk fever can set in early on, so we will give her some calcium this morning as a preventative.
