The Games That Made Me Who I Am:
#18: Ultima III: Exodus
Ultima III: Exodus was a game that took over my life (and my friends’ lives) for a while. It was the first computer RPG I played that let you control a party of adventurers instead of just one character, which made it feel a lot more like a tabletop adventure. My friends and I would spend entire nights playing this game—so much so that one of us may have lost a job because of it! I first spotted Ultima III at Wargames West in the Santa Fe mall, where you could rent time on computers to play games. I had an Atari ST at the time and just had to buy it for myself. It was the closest thing to playing a tabletop RPG on a computer back then.

Have you ever gotten so hooked on a game that it made you late for work (or worse)? What was your first real computer RPG experience?

Hey guys just an update on what's going on in my world. Last night I went to an Imagine Dragons concert and it had such a good vibe that I feel inspired to double down on my creative output.

With that in mind I intend to continue making a few more AI pieces for classic D&D spells which have been well received and people have contacted me by DM asking for more. Received a lot of positive feedback from The Dungeons & AI group.

After that I may do something similar for Gamma World images but I definitely want to do a series of Traveller ships. We have a lot of black-and-white line art of the line of ships that hasn't changed in like 30 years so I want to add a modern spin by visualizing as many ships and ship variations as I can. That means spending a lot of time in blender making 3D models of the various ships but it should be fun. The test renders I did with the modular cutter came out so good I'm looking forward to making additional ships. I'm getting some good feedback from the Traveller RPG AI tools group.

In addition, I will be adding some new Alpha testers to the tester pool for my Virtual GM project, so if you have applied and filled out the online form keep an eye on your email for a notification. Of course, if you are one of my patrons you get access to my projects in advance so just send me a DM and I'll put you in the alpha group right away so you can start adventuring.

In other virtual GM news, I will be adding the restore Game feature shortly so you can continue games you have already played. Every time you start a new game the AI stores it in a database that gets updated every time you make a move so all your game history is already in the database I just have to write the code to bring it back into the game.

I have a bunch of other projects on the back burner. One of which was parody commercials for futuristic products we might need in the Traveller universe. You've seen my ad for Bliz vacc suit cleaner which I'm getting a lot of good feedback on. This was an idea I came up with a couple of years ago but now that I've come so far with AI art I can pretty much get whatever image I want, add and remove elements from the image etc so that will allow me to make more quality product images as well as some AI music programs to generate the jingles and background music.

Another project is some more YouTube videos. I have a series on how to GM your first traveler game as well as a series of how to find tabletop RPG players specifically traveler players but generally any tabletop RPG player. I hope to get these done soon.

Another thing on my list of things to do is Cosmic Drifter. I got a lot of positive feedback on that Traveller-themed JRPG video game. But what I really want is to get 100 people to fill out the associated survey. That will tell me there is a true interest in this game and may motivate me to start a Kickstarter for it or put more effort into it.

I'd also like to continue making the virtual Scout ship and some other things with Epic Core. I would really like to make some more levels for The Crucible, my dungeon crawler.

Keep an eye out for my new book on jumpspace which details all the lore I could find about jump space expanded with new ideas and information about jump space, adventure hooks, role-playing tips, and more.

As you guys probably know, being a game designer, writer, or artist means you generally put your labor into something and then get paid back for it later. Well, I'm moving into 7 years of trying to make a full-time income from game design and content creation but I'm not there yet - not by a long shot. That means I may have to turn to things like Kickstarter to cover my living expenses while I develop the program.

I've got so many ideas and a bunch of half-finished projects, so lately I’ve had to focus on the ones that will bring in quick sales, even though I’ve got other projects that could pay off more in the long run.

This year has been pretty chaotic—losing my dad and taking in his dogs on top of my own, all without much local support, has made it really tough to concentrate and make progress. My dogs and his didn’t get along, so I had to make a one-hour round trip twice a day to take care of them at his place, which didn’t have internet. I went through my phone data fast, and it made it almost impossible to get into a productive workflow. It’s hard to get into a groove, then have to stop, and try to pick it up again later. I really need solid blocks of time—four, six, or even eight hours uninterrupted—to produce anything worthwhile.

Thankfully, things have settled down now. I had to put my dad’s older dog down last Friday because he had cancer, but the younger dog has adjusted and is now part of my pack. With that situation resolved, I can finally focus and work for longer stretches of time.

So there you have it- a million projects, a will to complete them all, and some inspiration to do it.

If you're enjoying what I'm doing, I'd really appreciate your support—whether it's as simple as sharing my posts. Every little bit helps! Liking, sharing, and subscribing to my YouTube channel or Facebook page is free and goes a long way in helping me understand what kind of content you want to see more of.

If you've picked up any of my publications, leaving a good review on DriveThruRPG would be amazing—it’s another way to show support at no cost to you. And if you're planning to make any purchases on DriveThruRPG, using the banners on my website or affiliate links on my channel gives me a small commission, which doesn’t cost you anything extra.

Of course, if you're able to buy my products or even become a Patron for just a dollar a month, that would mean the world to me.

Thanks so much for all your support! I’m excited for what’s ahead and look forward to another great year of creating content for this awesome community.

*The Empress Marava Far Trader: A Favorite Among Merchants*
If you’ve played a merchant in Traveller, you’re probably familiar with the Empress Marava Far Trader. It’s one of the most popular ships for players looking to haul cargo, make deals, and explore the stars. It’s got decent cargo space, but it’s still nimble enough for those quick getaways. I’ve done a few renderings of the ship, and it’s been fun to imagine how each one could look slightly different depending on the character flying it.

What about you? Do you like sticking to the classic design, or do you prefer a custom version that better suits your style?

The Games That Made Me Who I Am:
#17: BattleDroids (BattleTech/MechWarrior)
I started playing BattleDroids, which later became BattleTech and evolved into MechWarrior. The starter set had a few plastic models you could assemble, while the rest were cardboard standups that clipped into stands. I’ll always remember the night I put those little robots together with my two best friends, Adam and Jaime—we were 15 and 16 years old, excited to start stomping and shooting. It’s a memory I look back on fondly.

The game itself had us maneuvering our robots across a cardboard map with elevations and obstacles, and it reminded me of Robotech, which I loved as a kid. BattleDroids used damage tracking similar to Car Wars and Starfleet Battles. Our games often stretched for hours as we carefully tracked our movement, weapon firing arcs, and damage. Now, when I play MechWarrior Online, those 4-hour sessions are condensed into fast-paced 10-minute battles in a 12v12 format, but the spirit of tactical combat is still there.

Did you ever play any tabletop games that transitioned to digital versions? How did that change your experience?

The Games That Made Me Who I Am:
#16: Traveller (Classic)
Traveller was a huge influence on me, especially the original black book edition. I can’t quite remember if I bought my first set or if it was given to me by a friend who didn’t want to GM, but either way, it quickly became a big part of my life. I spent hours creating characters with its random generation system and even more time generating random star systems and subsectors. Traveller is what inspired me to really push my programming skills—I built programs to decode planetary profiles, generate star maps, and handle all the tedious calculations. I’d take my Traveller books with me on vacation and create new worlds and characters, eager to bring them back to my gaming group when I returned.

Now, at 56, I’m still deeply connected to Traveller, developing content under the Mongoose Traveller Open Gaming License. I write articles, create game expansions, battle maps for VTT (with my own take on classic ship designs), and work on hand-drawn, digital, 3D, and AI art. My goal is to give back to the community with virtual scout ship models, pre-rolled characters, 3D deck plans, and more—helping inspire the imagination of others to reach for the stars.

What was your first RPG that made you want to build entire worlds? How has it influenced your creativity?

The Games That Made Me Who I Am:
#15: Starfleet Battles

Starfleet Battles was a dream come true for me as a sci-fi fan and a big lover of Star Trek. I always played Klingon ships and spent countless hours running different scenarios with friends, whether at the local game store or at home, using hex maps to create massive fleet missions. What I loved about Starfleet Battles was the detailed character sheets for the ships. Each ship had boxes for shields, hull integrity, batteries, engines, and weapon firing arcs. Every type of ship had different firing arcs for its weapons, so you had to carefully manage your firing angles while keeping track of your own and the enemy’s weakened shields. It was a complex, but incredibly fun, starship combat simulation that truly captured the feel of tactical space warfare.

Have you ever played a game that gave you that deep sense of tactical control? What strategies did you use in your ship or fleet battles?

The Games That Made Me Who I Am:
#14: Car Wars

Car Wars was a blast for me because it let you design your own cars in a post-apocalyptic world where vehicles were tricked out with armor and weapons, much like in Road Warrior. The setting had a gritty future where highways were battlegrounds, and people fought to defend themselves or competed in arena battles for cash and salvage rights. One of the coolest parts was the vehicle character sheets, where you’d track damage to armor and weapon systems. My friends and I took it a step further and used matchbox cars we modified with parts from broken walkmans. We gave them machine guns, smoke screens, and spiked hubcaps, playing out these epic duels on large tables like the kitchen or pool table. It was one of my first real experiences with vehicle customization in a game, and it really set the stage for my love of modding and design.

Did you ever play a game where you could design your own vehicle? How did you customize it?

The Games That Made Me Who I Am:
#13: Champions Superhero RPG

Champions RPG was the first superhero game I played. What I really liked is that it gave superheroes more depth by introducing character flaws. It used a point-based system, so you’d spend points to build your powers, but you could lower the cost by adding limitations—like your power only working at night. You could also take disadvantages, like having a dependent NPC (think Aunt May), or a personal code against killing, to get more points for extra powers. This gave superheroes real character, making them more nuanced and interesting to play.

My main character was Green Thumb, an environmentalist superhero with plant-related powers, similar to Swamp Thing, but not monstrous. His nemesis was Petrochem, a mega-corporation polluting rivers and forests. I still remember the time Green Thumb tied a sewage pipe in a knot with his super strength, sending the waste right back to the factory. Champions was the game I played most at the time, and it really expanded my love for creating unique characters.

What’s an RPG that made you rethink character building? Did you create a hero with a really interesting flaw?
