Smita Bellur is rare amongst India’s vocalists. She is India’s first female Hindustani vocalist to have been accepted into a lineage of traditional qawaals (Sufi mystic singers) and to have
received extensive guidance from them.
Her deep engagement with mysticism and over 20 years of Khayal Indian classical singing,
has made her music rich and soulful with an easy access to the
spiritual poetry of the sub continent. Her perfect tones and her ability to sing mellifluously in many
languages (Hindi, Urdu, Kannada, Punjabi) connects her with audiences across the globe.
A post-graduate in systems management and ex-SAP manger, Smita has now dedicated her life
to performing and teaching music and making music in an environment
conducive to her spiritual practice.
