Dolar is the co-founder of what has become known as ‘the Ljubljana School’. His principal areas of research are psychoanalysis, modern French philosophy, German Idealism, and art theory. He has lectured extensively at universities in the US and across Europe, and he is the author of over a hundred papers in scholarly journals and volume collections. Apart from ten books in Slovene, his book publications include most notably A Voice and Nothing More and Opera’s Second Death.

How do we account for this paradox that the absence of Law universalizes prohibition? There is only one possible explanation: enjoyment itself, which we experience as "transgression", is in its innermost status something imposed, ordered - when we enjoy, we never do it "spontaneously", we always follow a certain injunction. The psychoanalytic name for this obscene injunction, for this obscene call "Enjoy!", is superego.

We can see clearly here the difference between the Möbius strip and the Klein bottle: in the Möbius strip, we pass from one to the other side of the strip, or from one term to its opposite, while in the Klein bottle, we pass from the hole in the midst of a circular body to the substance of this body itself, i.e., the void returns as the very body that envelops it. Only in this way do we arrive at subjectivity. Why? Subject is pure difference, and it emerges as such when this difference is no longer reduced to a difference between parts of some substantial content.
