The best bookkeeping tools!
The essential tools you need to effectively do bookkeeping and basic accounting:
1️⃣ A calculator. Either a tangible one or one on your computer or phone. I personally use the desktop calculator on my Microsoft package.
2️⃣ Excel. My job wouldn't be possible without it. I use Excel for tallying sales and expenses, calculating depreciation, creating management accounts, and more.
3️⃣ Bookkeeping software. Either your own or your clients/employers. The big three are:
Xero bit.ly/4fkXajv (exclusive discount)
Sage sage.qumg.net/5G2m3 (exclusive discount)
QuickBooks quickbooks.intuit.com/
4️⃣ Education. Either a basic recognised qualification/certification or free online courses.
The most basic and recognised bookkeeping qualification is the ICB: www.icbglobal.org/
My Ultimate Bookkeeping and Accounting Course: www.freebookkeepingaccounting.com/online-bookkeepi…
5️⃣ A notepad and pen. I love my desk notepad. I use one like these: www.amazon.co.uk/desk-jotter-pad-a3/s?k=desk+jotte…
6️⃣ An email account. You'll need to receive and possibly send invoices. You may also need to liaise with clients/work colleagues.
7️⃣ A computer or laptop. You cannot do any bookkeeping without one! All basic bookkeeping packages will run on a simple computer. You don't need anything fancy. You will be typing and storing data, so a desktop computer is better than a laptop.
8️⃣ Saved websites and YT channels for training and questions. My list of free courses: www.freebookkeepingaccounting.com/free-bookkeeping…

Christmas!
It's coming! Our tree is up, and the presents are wrapped!🎄🎁
Just like Christmas, accounting can be stressful. Here are some top tips for reducing accounting pressure:
1️⃣ When agreeing on deadlines, always allow more time than you think you need. From my experience, everything always takes longer than I initially think!
2️⃣ Create a to-do list. On the list, have 1-2 priority jobs. These are the jobs which must be done before clearing other items off the list.
3️⃣ Have regular breaks. It may sound counterproductive to work less, but breaks reset you emotionally, mentally, and physically. They are essential. During breaks, get rest and keep yourself nourished and hydrated.
4️⃣ Remind yourself of the 'why'. Some jobs are stepping stones to something greater. Others are to provide for loved ones. Focusing on the why can be more motivational and rewarding than focusing on the what.
5️⃣ Don't commit to anything which will make you too busy. Fill your day and be productive, but doing too much is the easiest way of getting burnt out.

Financial statements!
I love all aspects of accounting. To name a few: bookkeeping, reconciliations, and tax returns.
However, my all-time favourite is reviewing and analysing financial statements! I love that the profit and loss statement and balance sheet tell the reader so much. With the proper knowledge and formulas, the reader can judge whether the business is growing, profitable, running short of cash, and its strengths and weaknesses. Financial analysis should be called financial wizardry!

Sage!
I started my accounting education and career on Sage (Sage 50 Accounts). I loved it. There was no real alternative back then.
When I first became self-employed, I was a Sage trainer. I used to travel all around East Anglia, providing one-to-one Sage training.
Over the years, Sage has changed and developed. Their most popular package for smaller businesses is now Sage Business Cloud Accounting. You can trial this software, and others, for 30-days free: sage.qumg.net/5G2m3
My website is full of Sage-related training content: www.freebookkeepingaccounting.com/free-sage-traini… You can learn free.
Do you use Sage? If not, which package are you using?

Accountants!
Businesses have three options:
1️⃣ Hire an accountant (maybe a bookkeeper, too)
2️⃣ Do the accounts and tax return(s) themselves
3️⃣ Don't prepare or file tax returns
Let's have a look at these options in more detail:
1️⃣ A good accountant and/or bookkeeper is worth their weight in gold. They don't just exist to calculate your tax charge and help you save tax. However, these items are essential.
Up-to-date financial accounts provide so many business insights. Without them, your business is operating financially blind 😣
Businesses succeed or fail due to their finances.
In the words of Warren Buffett, 'Accounting is the language of business'.

2️⃣ This is an option. However, you must be competent with numbers, accounting, and tax. I say this not to discourage you but to guide you. Generally, the smaller the business, the easier the accounts and tax return will be.
If you want to do your own accounts or the accounts for a client, family member, etc, then...

3️⃣ You'll be surprised how many businesses choose this option 😭
They learn the hard way, usually after receiving fines, penalties, and often a considerable tax bill. Unfortunately, some never learn!
I don't recommend option three 😂
I have limited company accounts to prepare this week, and I will work on a new YT series, 'Depreciation'.
