It's been a mystery to some of us, which aircraft Jim Howard flew on his Medal of Honor mission on 11 January 1944. From 356th Fighter Squadron mission schedules by group mission:
9: 30 Dec 1943 flew AJ-A
10: 31 Dec 1943 flew AJ-A
11: 4 Jan 1944 flew AJ-X
12: 5 Jan 1944 flew AJ-X
13: 7 Jan 1944 no record found indicating Howard flew this mission
14: 11 Jan 1944 flew AJ-X (43-6441, while assigned AJ-A 43-6315 DING HAO)
Steve Blake author of "the Pioneer Mustang Group", 2008 provided the proof with the 354th Fighter Group Mission 14 schedule (attached).
I stumbled on a photo of an early DING HAO in a 354th Fighter Group Youtube video produced by Jon Teboe. Jon has two videos with that photo (Naming Our WWII Fighter Planes - Heroes of the 354th Fighter Group - YouTube, JAMES HOWARD and "DINGHAO!" - YouTube). Notes I made decades ago after reading Jim Howard's autobiography "Roar of the Tiger" borrowed from a public library, indicate Jim made claims for German aircraft destroyed on 20 Dec '43, 31 Dec '43 and early Jan 1944. If my notes are correct, the three swastikas in the photo of the early DING HAO may date the photo to around 4 or 5 Jan 1944. Zooming in on that early DING HAO photo, it appears to read: "SERIAL NO. AAF 43-6315" but could be 43-6375 which was assigned to the 354th FG (and Jim Howard?) and shot down on 13 Dec 1943 per MACR 1464.
Photos and mission 14 schedule are from Steve Blake. Four images are attached.

Visualize World War II era aviation stories in narrated documentaries with animated combat flight simulator video and realistic aircraft skins. In 1992, I created a display cabinet for my model World War II aircraft and I see this channel as an extension of that hobby and my lifelong interest in World War II aviation.
