A chubby white man sat by the lake, his frame relaxed in the afterglow of a simple meal. He had just finished a piece of bread and, with a look of quiet contentment, rubbed his hands together. Then, slipping on his headphones, he began to dance—silently, joyfully—toward the water’s edge. With a gentle spring, he tapped his heels with his toes, arms tracing wide circles in the air, like a jubilant waterbird caught mid-flight.
Mayflies skimmed across the surface of the lake, slicing through ripples and reflections—lighter than wind, almost not of this world.
I had no talent to offer in return, save a small round of applause and a friendly smile. Yet in that moment, we shared something. Our moments were not the same, but they touched. And in that brief exchange, the things that could not be shared felt somehow lighter, easier to bear.
