If my Beloved spilled my blood,
I will dance in joy, offering my soul.

Shawq-i Mahdī by Fayḍ Kāshānī reflects a deep yearning for Imam Mahdī (the 12th Shīʿī Imām), blending personal longing with poetic mastery. It emphasizes the metaphysical role of the Imam within the cosmos, drawing inspiration from Hāfez Shīrāzī’s poetry. Shawq-i Mahdī work embodies heartfelt devotion, aiming to soothe the soul through spiritual expression.
Below are some verses from this masterpiece.
How can the heart, without your love, find the truth?
The Real shone from the mirror of your face upon all hearts.
دل بیبهره از مهرت حقیقت را کجا یابد
حق از آیینه رویت تجلی کرد بر دلها
In the dark night, with waves crashing and dreadful whirlpools abound,
Show me the way, guide me from the depths of separation to the shores.
شب تاریک و بیم موج و گردابی چنین هائل
ز غرقاب فراق خود رهی بنما به ساحلها
If I knew the way to your abode, I’d travel without delay.
Oh, how sweet it would be to know the path and customs of your dwelling.
اگر دانستمی کویت به سر میآمدم سویت
خوشا گر بودمی آگه ز راه و رسم منزلها
(Fayḍ Kāshānī, Shawq-i Mahdī, Ghazal 1:4;6-7)
(فیض کاشانی، شوق مهدی، غزل 1:4;6-7)

Meet Ayatollah Mirza Ali Aqa Qazi Tabatabai (1285–1366 AH), a great Shiʿa Muslim Iranian scholar and mystic of the 14th century. His profound knowledge in mysticism, ethics, and jurisprudence influenced many renowned scholars.
Born in Tabriz, Iran, in 1285 AH, Ayatollah Qazi grew up in a family of scholars, with a lineage tracing back to Imam Hasan (AS). He was raised in an environment of piety and learning, which shaped his spiritual and intellectual journey.
He studied under prominent scholars such as Akhund Khurasani and Shaykh Muhammad Bahari, becoming proficient in fiqh, hadith, and tafsir. But his true passion lay in ethics and mysticism.
In pursuit of higher knowledge, Ayatollah Qazi moved to Najaf, where he connected with the spiritual teachings of great masters like Sayyid Ahmad Karbala’i and Mirza Muhammad Taqi.
As a Shiʿa scholar Ayatollah Qazi believed that reaching true knowledge and spirituality is impossible without the love and guidance of the Ahl al-Bayt (AS). He emphasized the importance of finding a true spiritual guide.
Among his many students were renowned figures like Allama Tabatabai and Ayatollah Behjat, who carried forward his legacy of ethical refinement and deep spirituality.
Ayatollah Qazi taught that prayer (especially Salat al-Layl, night prayer) was the key to both worldly success and spiritual elevation. He often said, “If you want the world or the hereafter, perform the night prayer.”
Despite facing opposition from some, Ayatollah Qazi’s teachings on mysticism and ethics have left an indelible mark on Shiʿa scholarship, inspiring generations to seek deeper spiritual truths.
Ayatollah Qazi spent his final years in Najaf, often visiting Wadi Al-Salam to reflect on the hereafter. He passed away in 1366 AH and was buried in this sacred cemetery.
“True spiritual progress lies in sincerity, humility, and love for the Ahl al-Bayt.” - Ayatollah Qazi. Learn more about his life and teachings. Follow us for more insights into the lives of great scholars.
