I spotted this Arizona bark scorpion after packing up my tent this morning. I had a fabulous week camping in Organ Pipe National Monument. I'm glad I'm didn't see any other scorpion during my stay! I'm also glad to have not seen any rattlers!

The stick bug was hanging out on my tent yesterday. They're harmless, but it still gave me a bit of a squicky feeling knowing it was there (I first spotted it from inside the tent but fortunately not on the door).

I'm not sure but the lizard could be a whiptail. I hope so, because those fascinating lizards are mostly female and reproduce via parthenogenesis!

So my birdwatching video don't get many views, but I'll keep making them, or at least post pictures, because I am becoming increasingly obsessed with these beautiful creatures.

Here are a few snapshots of some feathered friends that I saw on my trip to Death Valley earlier this week.

There were great-tailed grackles, European collared doves, and Brewers blackbirds in the park. Nearby in Tecopa Hot Springs I was able to capture a Says Phoebe, and what is probably an Anna's hummingbird. There were also house finches, rock wrens, sparrows, and a roadrunner that ran so fast it was out of sight before I could fumble my phone camera into position.

Here are some photo highlights of my beach outing this afternoon. I'm not into football and I was hoping the beach wouldn't be too crowded, despite being the first sunny Sunday since the big storms rolled through.

I made a video about the day. Check it out! https://youtu.be/0KAdQ-c-eF4

Wow. I "lived" in my 10 x 10 canvas Springbar tent for almost three weeks. I was gone between January 11 and January 31 (inclusive of the driving day coming home).

I had one miserable night sleeping in the over packed car, my first night at Valley of Fire (because I had to move sites the next day). Aside from that, I slept on my cot with Exped Megamat every night, even when it dipped below freezing.

Was it more comfortable than sleeping in my car, like I did for 2 1/2 months this fall?? What do you think?

I'm definitely going to make a video about it. But I have to edit a bunch of others and clear space on my phone!

Hey everyone!

So I made it to Quartzsite and my lovely friend CC showed me how to set up the Springbar. She also set up her larger Kodiak tent as a common room - complete with a Mr Buddy heater!

The first night in Quartzsite was very cold and windy. It rained the next morning then stayed crazy windy. The tent held up just fine! I couldn't sleep the first night with the tent flapping in the wind, but I stuck it out and was very warm with my sleep system. I never sleep well on my first night of a trip, even inside the car. So I just stayed on my cot all night, warm but mostly awake.

Last night was perfectly calm. I took a couple of CBD gummies and slept great in the tent. I'm actually typing this up from inside my car, with a blanket on my lap because my Bluetti is in here and my phone battery was getting a bit low. After I post this I'm going back to the tent.

Goodnight (or good morning or good afternoon depending on when you actually read this?

It'll be even colder tonight so I'm going to stay in a heated cabin for a couple of nights.

Fortunately it won't stay cold long - I'm really looking forward to KOKOFest 2023 in a few days!

I *think* this is a female long-tailed grackle, based on the Merlin app ID from photo feature. If you're a real birder and I'm wrong, please let me know. The other option Merlin suggested was Brewer's blackbird. Both species have black males but the females tend to be more brown. When I use Merlin with the picture that has the head facing camera, it only suggests long-tailed grackle; when I use the more distant picture it suggests grackle first, Brewer's blackbird second. Anyway, for such a small bird I think it has a pretty noble face, and intimidating claws on that lifted up leg!

Whoopsie! I had to pull today's video about Nevada's Walker Lake. A friend pointed out that I messed up the first four seconds with a photo of myself. I had originally uploaded a 2 minute or so version of the Walker Lake video, but decided to add some commentary at the end to talk about how the lake is dying. In that process I must have dropped an image at the front of it, and I didn't rewatch the entire video before re-uploading and scheduling it. So anyway I have tried to crop that image out at the front so as to not turn people off. YouTube says it may take a while to process. In the meantime rather than leaving it up live, I've temporarily set it to private. Now I just need to remember to turn it back on after a while.
