Would I Use @duolingo to Learn a New Language?

I recently tried Duolingo for learning Turkish and Hindi and here’s what I think:

✅ Fun & Easy: Great for casual learners! Quick exercises and feedback keep things engaging.

❌ Limited Progress: 15 minutes a day won't take you far. You can’t control the lessons or focus on what you need most.

It’s a good supplement, but not enough for real fluency.

📚🎧 Reading vs. Listening: What's Best for Learning?

I often get asked whether reading or listening is more effective for learning. Here’s how I combine the two in my language learning:

1️⃣ Reading helps retention: Studies show that readers score higher on comprehension tests compared to listeners. When you read, you can revisit complex sections easily.

2️⃣ Listening is great for multitasking: Audiobooks and podcasts let you absorb language while doing other activities, like commuting, exercising, or doing chores.

3️⃣Both are complementary: Mixing reading with listening reinforces understanding. Try reading a book while listening to its audiobook version!

4️⃣ Experiment and discover: Everyone learns differently. Explore both methods and see what works best for you.

📚 Why Extensive Reading Is So Effective for Language Learning

I believe extensive reading is one of the most powerful ways to boost comprehension, vocabulary, and overall fluency. Here’s how to make the most of it:

1️⃣ Embrace some ambiguity: You don’t need to understand 100%—10-15% unknown words is ideal!

2️⃣ Read about topics you enjoy: This will help you to stay interested and motivated.

3️⃣ Narrow your focus: It always helps to stick to a specific subject for a while to build and reinforce vocabulary.

4️⃣ Combine with listening: Listening while you read helps you enhance comprehension and internalize the language's natural flow, which is exactly what we want.

Improve Your Comprehension with These 5 Tips!

1️⃣ Embrace new vocabulary. You don’t need to know 95% of the words to benefit from a text! Aim for 10-15% unknown words to challenge yourself while expanding your vocabulary.

2️⃣ Choose engaging content. Select topics you enjoy and are familiar with to make the learning process more engaging.

3️⃣ Accept ambiguity. It's okay to get things wrong initially. Adopt the mindset of "getting it wrong the first time" and keep pushing forward!

4️⃣ Narrow your focus. Concentrate on a specific subject area for a while before switching to another. This approach increases your chances of encountering familiar vocabulary.

5️⃣ Harness the power of listening. Start by listening to materials at normal speed, then gradually increase it to challenge yourself. This helps you become accustomed to the language's natural rhythm and builds your comprehension skills.

Does Spaced Repetition Actually Work?

When it comes to language learning, tools like spaced repetition systems (SRS) can help, but they aren't the only solution.

I used a form of spaced repetition when learning Chinese characters 50 years ago, writing them out again and again. While I’m not a heavy SRS user now, the repetition I did back then was key in helping me memorize 1,000 characters!

Today, many language apps, including @lingq, integrate some form of spaced repetition for vocabulary. However, it’s important to know that learning isn't just about repeating words. It’s about context and input-based learning.

Studies show that exposure to language in varied contexts can reduce the need to constantly revisit specific words. The brain starts to predict and understand language patterns based on repeated exposure in meaningful ways.

So, while SRS can be helpful, it’s all about finding what works for you. Some might enjoy flashcards; others, like myself, might prefer massive exposure to content through reading and listening.

At the end of the day, the best approach is the one that keeps you engaged, motivated, and immersed in the language. Keep learning, keep discovering!

Speaking vs. Comprehension: What’s the Real Relationship?

Many believe that speaking is the ultimate goal in language learning, but is it really the key to effective communication? Let’s take a closer look.

1️⃣ Meaningful input matters: Real communication starts with understanding. Before you can express yourself, you need to comprehend the language through meaningful input.

2️⃣ The role of output Speaking helps us identify gaps in our knowledge. When we try to articulate our thoughts, we often realize what we don’t know, and this awareness pushes us to grow and improve.

3️⃣ Emotional factors: Stress and fear can hinder our ability to communicate effectively. Create a comfortable environment for yourself, where the goal is to communicate, not to be perfect.

4️⃣ Natural order of acquisition: We don’t acquire structures in the order they're taught or practiced, but rather in a way that unfolds organically over time. Trust the process, knowing that fluency builds over time, and mistakes are part of the journey.

So, instead of putting pressure on yourself to speak perfectly, focus on understanding and enjoying the process. What strategies do YOU use to balance speaking and comprehension? Let’s discuss!
