St. Mary's Episcopal Church (Church of the Frescoes)
West Jefferson, NC.
One of West Jefferson’s most visited attractions (FREE to enter and view). The fresco paintings in this small beautiful church were created in 1974 by North Carolina native Ben Long. The incredible frescoes include “Mary, Great with Child,” "John the Baptist," and “The Mystery of Faith”.
This is by far the best photo that I have ever taken of the exterior of St. Mary's. A little bit of fresh snow and some early morning sunshine made it magical.

Here at Appalachian Memory Keepers we LOVE finding old barns and photographing them, particularly before they fall down and are lost forever! This one we found on a back road in Bland, VA.

Just finished our new video on Hart Square Village's 2024 Heritage Festival. It was an amazing time of living history and music at the country's largest collection of log structures. We filmed a wide selection of the craftspeople demonstrating their historical crafts. Our video GOES LIVE this Wednesday (November 9th, 2024) at 3PM!

💔Our hearts and prayers go out this morning to everyone affected by the Hurricane. The mountain communities in Appalachia and beyond have been horribly impacted. I know. I live in one where a state of emergency has been declared and the devastation is immense.💔
THANK YOU to all the emergency responders, police, firemen, utility workers, and volunteers who have worked (and will work in the days and weeks ahead) so hard to help their friends and neighbors in these trying times.
May God Bless each and every one of you!

Recently I went to War. War, West Virginia that is.
War is a city in McDowell County, West Virginia, United States. The population was 690 at the 2020 census. War was incorporated in 1920 by the Circuit Court of McDowell County. Its name is derived from War Creek, whose confluence with Dry Fork is located within the city. War is the only place in the United States with this name. War was formerly known as Miner's City.

Did anybody take Paregoric as a child at the behest of a parent? I did not but I have heard from a lot of those a bit older than me that they did.
Back when medicine was unregulated . . . 45% Alcohol with 1.83 grains of opium. Yikes! 😳
