In September of 2022 I began working on a project to take a group of veterans on motorcycles to Tuktoyaktuk, Canada and film a documentary talking about veteran and active duty suicide. After 9 months and hundreds of man hours that trip took place between June 8th and June 28th of this year. 7 veterans spent 21 days driving nearly 6000 miles to the Arctic Ocean and back. Along the way it cost us literal blood, sweat, and tears. People opened up about the demons which have been chasing them, and about the times they nearly gave into those same demons. We saw landscapes of such beauty it literally left us speechless, wildlife so close you could almost touch it, and people so friendly you didn’t want to leave.

No footage from that project will see the light of day.

One selfish individual has decided that for all of us. All the work we put in; the money we gathered, the long nights, hours of planning, calls begging for money, stressing over routes, acquiring permits, and pouring our souls into the project are for nothing. The 16 hour days, the mosquitos, falling asleep on the bike, sitting in 93 degree temperatures, pouring rain, mud, dust, close calls, and laughs around the campfire. Unloading our very souls into cameras in the hopes that it will speak to a veteran out there and get them not to make that bad decision. That was for nothing.

I’m sorry to everyone else on the trip. I’m sorry to Alex and Grace for your backbreaking work which you will never get credit for. I’m sorry to everyone who worked your asses off to get this trip completed and for digging deep into those dark places and being vulnerable with each other so we could try to make something great. This was the most incredible thing I have been a part of since leaving the military. I’m sorry to Portland Community College and Veterans Back 40 for the tens of thousands of dollars you spent and due to the actions of one person will get nothing back. I’m sorry to the dozens of companies which sponsored us with money, equipment, discounts, and gift cards. I’m sorry it was all for nothing.

And most of all I’m sorry to the veterans who will not get a chance to watch us struggle with the same things you fight against every day. You are not alone. You deserve to know that, and you deserve better.

I’m sorry.

I'm sitting down with the BDR organizers next week. What questions do you have for them?

I apologize for the sound issues in my upcoming videos. I've since discovered the Hero 9 has a bad habit of cutting the lav mic out on the media mod. And until you look at the footage there's no way to tell it happened. Going forward I will be using the Hero 11 as apparently the 9s are just a pain in the ass with the media mod. If there was another camera system I could run a mic and external power into I would do it.

Starting to lock down plans for next summer and wanted to reach out to you all.

I will be taking part in, and helping film, a veterans motorcycle expedition to Tuktoyaktuk. This will eventually be on the channel but as I am not in charge it will not be the primary focus. I do want to reach out to my fellow veterans, if you are interested in taking part please contact Jon through the methods below. We need riders and people interested in support roles. If you want to support the ride in other ways there are donation links, a QR donation code, and a GoFundme set up for fundraising. Money raised towards this project which is not used for the trip/video production will be donated to Veterans Back 40 Adventure/ Warrior Outfitters for their continued assistance to veterans and active duty.

In June of 2023, Warfighter Outfitters and Veterans Back 40 Adventure will lead a group of Veterans and Active-Duty military on a motorcycle ride from Portland Oregon to Tuktoyaktuk (Tuk for short), 120 miles north of the Arctic Circle. This journey will take approximately three weeks and cover over 5400 miles round trip. The group will consist of 8-10 adventure motorcycle riders, and a support vehicle. We will record this expedition and create a documentary of the effort.

Suicide is the 2nd most common cause of death for Active-Duty service members, and Veterans experience rates of suicide more than 2.5 times higher than the general population. This ride seeks to raise money for additional suicide prevention resources, and provide an outlet for Veterans and Active-Duty personnel who might otherwise be struggling with depression and suicidal tendencies.

The people have spoken and 3/4ths of you want more videos. New videos will post every Tuesday/Friday at 3PM (better for the algorithm apparently) until I run out of material for Season 1 of RTIC. Enjoy!
