The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has approved ₹65 crore for pre-monsoon road repairs and restoration, aiming to complete the work by May 31. In addition, ₹15 crore has been allocated for micro-surfacing across 50 km of roads, based on a survey conducted through the Road Asset Management System (RAMS). Civic officials claim this preventive maintenance will ensure pothole-free roads during the rains. However, residents and activists have raised concerns over the quality of work, alleging that tenders are approved at low rates and substandard materials are often used, resulting in roads that fail to withstand monsoon conditions.
Citizens and groups like Surajya Sangharsha Samiti have urged the PMC to prioritize long-term durability over rushed fixes. Many city residents expressed frustration over repeated spending on road repairs without lasting results, calling it a misuse of taxpayers’ money. Adding to these concerns, civic officials revealed that several roads repaired before monsoon will be dug up again post-monsoon for projects like laying CCTV and government data-sharing network cables activities that are expected to cost an additional ₹600 crore.

The Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) amnesty scheme aimed at regularising illegal water connections has seen a dismal response, with only 130 residents coming forward in nearly four months. This is despite an estimated 2 lakh illegal water connections across the city, mostly in slum areas. Civic officials admit they face significant hurdles such as political pressure, which hampers action against such connections. While PMC has disconnected 835 illegal taps so far, officials note that many residents simply reconnect them illegally. Previous efforts in 2021 also failed to garner adequate participation, with just 500 regularisations — none from commercial setups.
Civic activists and residents alike have expressed frustration over the situation, highlighting the unfairness faced by those who pay taxes but receive inadequate water supply, while illegal users enjoy uninterrupted access. This time, PMC has removed earlier restrictions, allowing regularisation even in illegal properties. Ward-wise teams have been deployed to detect and address illegal taps, especially in areas reporting low water pressure. However, citizens’ groups argue that the PMC lacks the political will to enforce rules strictly, allowing the problem to persist without any real deterrence.

📍 123 Newly Inducted CNG Buses Withdrawn

🔧 Action Taken:
The buses have been sent back to the manufacturer for technical evaluation and repairs. PMPML confirmed that these buses will only be reintroduced after all faults are resolved.
🚏 Impact on Commuters:
The withdrawal has disrupted daily public transport, especially in areas like Hadapsar, Narveer Tanaji Wadi, and Shewalwadi, where these buses were operational.
🗣️ Official Statement:
PMPML’s Chairman & Managing Director stated that a final decision on bringing the buses back will be made post-repairs, with safety and commuter comfort as top priorities.
🔄 Current Status:
PMPML is actively working with the manufacturer to fix the issues.
✅ Stay tuned for updates on when these CNG buses will be back on Pune’s roads.
♻️ While Pune pushes toward eco-friendly mobility, this incident highlights the need for quality checks and durable infrastructure in public transit systems.

To ensure smoother roads during the upcoming monsoon, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will spend ₹15 crore on preventive maintenance using advanced micro-surfacing technology. The work will cover nearly 50 km of roads across the city, with an estimated area of 3.8 lakh square meters. The project is split between two zones — East and West — with ₹7.5 crore allocated to each. The PMC’s Road Department, which will float tenders soon, said this initiative is aimed at addressing the surge in road complaints typically seen post-monsoon.
Micro-surfacing, previously tested on Senapati Bapat Road under the ‘Mission 17’ initiative, showed promising results, keeping roads intact for three to four years without potholes. Officials said the technology significantly reduces wear and tear, lowers long-term maintenance costs, and is ideal for pre-monsoon upkeep. The civic body plans to begin the work in the coming weeks, aiming to complete resurfacing on key roads before the rainy season to ensure minimal disruption and better driving conditions for citizens.

Despite being proposed over seven years ago to ease traffic on the old Mumbai-Pune highway, nine crucial flyover projects remain unexecuted due to delays in fund sanctioning by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Senior MSRDC officials confirmed that the Rs 1,000 crore required for the projects has not yet been approved. These flyovers were identified at critical congestion points like Somatane Phata, Dehu Road Y Junction, Talegaon-Chakan Road, and others. The flyovers, each spanning 300–500 meters, were planned under a public-private partnership model, but the proposals remain on paper while daily commuters face increasing traffic woes and safety risks.
In parallel, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has drafted a more ambitious plan to expand the old highway from four to six lanes at an estimated cost of Rs 10,000 crore. This plan includes the original flyover locations and aims to address accident-prone stretches like the 16km Khopoli-Lonavala section known for sharp turns and elevation changes. However, with both proposals awaiting central approval, commuters continue to endure prolonged traffic jams and unsafe driving conditions on a key route that urgently needs infrastructural upgrades.

🚨 Unused ₹31 Cr Balewadi-Wakad Bridge Finally Gets Green Signal! HC Orders PMC to Act Fast! 🛣️
After five years of abandonment, the Bombay High Court has issued strict directives to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to immediately acquire the pending land and open the Balewadi-Wakad bridge for public use.
📍 This 175-metre-long, 30-metre-wide bridge over the Mula River was completed in 2019 at a cost of ₹31 Crores to connect Baner, Balewadi (PMC) with Wakad, Kaspate Vasti (PCMC). However, due to lack of land acquisition on the Balewadi side, it remained unused, turning into a dumping zone and parking space for trucks.
🚗 Citizens travelling between Wakad and Balewadi lose 40 minutes to 1 hour daily, burning excess fuel by taking a longer detour via the Mumbai-Bangalore highway. The court noted that this is a major public inconvenience and waste of taxpayer money.
⚖️ The High Court, responding to a petition by local citizens, slammed PMC for delays and directed the Land Acquisition Department to complete formalities within 2 months and hand over the land. PMC has submitted an affidavit allocating ₹25 Crore for acquisition.
📢 Petitioners stated:
“This is a long-overdue win for West Pune. If PMC delays further, we will knock on the court’s doors again.”
👥 The bridge was originally proposed in 2013, built in 2019, but never opened — making it a prime example of poor planning and civic apathy.
Now, with the court’s strict oversight and public pressure mounting, the bridge could finally cut commute times, reduce traffic on highways, and serve over lakh+ commuters across Hinjawadi, Wakad, Balewadi, and Baner.
Let’s hope PMC turns words into action this time.

Commuters were left confused on Friday morning when the Bhide Bridge near Deccan Gymkhana an important link to the city’s peth areas was unexpectedly closed for Metro construction work. The closure forced vehicles to take alternative routes like Lakdi Bridge and Z-Bridge, leading to traffic diversions. However, due to the lack of prior public notice and the potential for chaos during the evening rush hour, the bridge was reopened by the afternoon. Maha Metro officials later announced that the bridge closure has been rescheduled to begin on Sunday night and will continue until June 6 to facilitate the construction of a foot-over bridge (FOB) connecting the peth areas to the Deccan Gymkhana metro station.
During the closure, while traffic on the riverside road will remain unaffected, commuters will have to rely on nearby bridges to cross the river. Frequent users of the Bhide Bridge have raised concerns about increased traffic congestion on JM Road and other parallel routes during this period. Many are urging authorities to deploy additional traffic wardens at key junctions to manage the situation efficiently. Metro officials said they aim to complete the bulk of the construction work before the onset of monsoon.
