Bali is one of those destinations that defies all expectations and leaves you in awe. Here are five surprising things I discovered when visiting this enchanting Indonesian island:
1. Prepare for High Flight Prices
Bali may be a dreamy paradise, but getting there can be priceyâespecially if you're flying from a major city like New York. I initially expected the flight costs to be similar to those for Manila, but Baliâs remote location and popularity as a tourist hotspot made my July flight soar to nearly $2,000.
Fortunately, there are ways to cut costs. Traveling during the off-season (November to March) can significantly lower flight expenses. This is Bali's rainy season, but showers are usually brief and followed by sunshine, allowing for a more tranquil experience. Another option is to fly into a larger Asian hub like Singapore, Bangkok, or Kuala Lumpur, then book a separate budget flight to Bali. Doing this saved me a few hundred dollarsâand I even got to explore the lively streets of Bangkok along the way.
2. Affordable Adventures Await
Once youâre in Bali, your dollar goes a long way. From food to activities, everything is reasonably priced. Despite the expensive flight, I found that I could fill my days with incredible experiences without breaking the bank.
Some of favorite activities are:
ATV Rides and Whitewater Rafting in Ubud: Both activities offer an exhilarating way to take in the lush Balinese landscape, and theyâre far more affordable compared to similar experiences elsewhere.
Relaxing at Spring Spa: A 90-minute massage at Spring Spa is a luxurious yet budget-friendly treat, with plenty of even cheaper spas around the island offering relaxing massages at bargain prices.
Surfing in Seminyak: I took a two-hour private surf lesson with Milu Bali Surf School. The cherry on top? Professional photographers are there to capture your surfing moments for just a few dollars per photo.
Donât forget to tip your guides, drivers, and waitstaffâa small tip can make a big difference for them and is a great way to show appreciation for their hospitality.
3. Plan for Unpredictable Weather
Baliâs dry season spans from May to October, but "dry" doesnât always mean rain-free. During my stay, it rained on nine out of ten days! Be prepared with backup plans in case the weather doesnât cooperate.
Hereâs what you could do on rainy days:
Surf Anyway: Bali is known for its world-class surf spots, and a little rain doesnât change that. In fact, youâre getting wet either way, so grab a board and ride the waves regardless of the weather.
Play Padel: If youâre looking for indoor fun, try padelâa mix of tennis and squash. We found indoor courts at Island Sports Club in Uluwatu, and it was a fun way to spend a rainy afternoon.
Explore the Food Scene: From local Indonesian dishes to vegetarian-friendly cafes, Bali has a surprisingly diverse culinary scene. Rainy days are the perfect opportunity to hop between eateries and sample the islandâs best flavors.
4. Avoid Getting Stuck in Traffic
Bali is renowned for its serene beauty, but the traffic is another story. The islandâs roads are mostly single-lane, and heavy traffic is commonâespecially in popular areas like Ubud, Uluwatu, Seminyak, and Canggu. On one occasion, it took us three-and-a-half hours to travel just 11 miles!
To make the most of your days, start early and plan to return to your accommodation after dinner. This strategy not only helped us avoid peak traffic but also allowed us to pack in as much adventure as possible. One day, we managed to visit the Tegalalang Rice Terraces and the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, explore Ubudâs charming shops, and end the day with a Korean BBQ feastâall without getting caught in major traffic.
5. Experience the Warmth of Balinese Hospitality
One of the most heartwarming surprises in Bali was the kindness and warmth of the local people. Although some travelers worry about language barriers in Asia, this was not an issue in Baliâmost locals speak English. Even when you don't share a common language, it is easy to connect, as the genuine hospitality of the Balinese shines through in every interaction.
