🚀 Still Struggling to Speak Spanish? Here’s Why. 🇪🇸

You’ve been learning Spanish for a while—studying vocabulary, listening to native speakers, maybe even practicing a bit.

But when it’s time to have a real conversation? Your mind goes blank.

Frustrating, right? The problem isn’t effort—it’s lack of structure.

Random words and grammar rules won’t magically come together on their own. But with the right plan, Spanish actually starts making sense, and speaking becomes way easier.

🎯 It’s not about working harder—it’s about learning the right way.

The Girl Who Did a Month’s Worth of Practice in Six Minutes 🎷🇪🇸

Back in 2009, a writer named Daniel Coyle wanted to answer a simple question:

“How do people get insanely good at things?”

(e.g., speaking Spanish)

Was it talent?

Genetics?

A teacher from My Daily Spanish? 😉

To find out, he met up with Gary McPherson, a music psychologist studying a young clarinet player who became known as…

The Girl Who Did a Month’s Worth of Practice in Six Minutes.

🎶 The Secret Behind Her Learning Speed

Picture this:

Coyle arrives at McPherson’s lab, where he’s shown a video of 13-year-old Clarissa practicing a jazz piece called Golden Wedding.

Now, at first glance, Clarissa seems completely ordinary—she’s sleepy, wearing a hoodie, and, according to her parents, isn’t even that great at music.

But then, she starts practicing…

👉 She plays a few notes—mistake.
👉 She frowns, adjusts, and tries again—mistake.
👉 She hums the rhythm, plays again—mistake.

Every time she messes up, she stops, fixes it, and repeats.

It’s slow, awkward, and honestly kind of painful to watch.

But here’s the shocker:

McPherson is jumping with excitement.

“This is how a professional musician practices for a performance!” he says.

But wait… if she’s making so many mistakes, how is she learning so fast?!

The Truth About Mistakes & Learning

Here’s what Coyle discovered:

Clarissa wasn’t learning in spite of making mistakes…

🔥 She was learning BECAUSE she was making mistakes. 🔥

She didn’t ignore her errors—she heard them, fixed them, and improved with each attempt.

That’s why her learning speed was 10x faster than normal.

Now compare that to when she played a song she already knew.

McPherson sighed:

👉 “She’s not learning, not building… just wasting time.”

What Does This Have to Do with Spanish?

Everything.

Because what do most Spanish learners hate, hate, HATE?

Making mistakes.

(If I had a peso every time someone told me, “I don’t want to start speaking yet—I’ll make loads of mistakes!!” …I’d be sipping piña coladas in the Caribbean. 🏝️)

But as Clarissa’s story shows…

✅ Mistakes aren’t a problem.

✅ Mistakes are HOW you learn.

If you’re not making mistakes… you’re not improving.

So next time you:

🗣️ Struggle through a conversation

🎧 Listen to a Spanish podcast and don’t catch every word

📱 Mispronounce something on Duolingo

Congratulations! 🎉 You’re in “the Clarissa Zone.”

And that’s EXACTLY where you need to be.

Are You Making “Offensive” Pronunciation Mistakes? 😳🇪🇸

Back in the day…

There was a song playing in clubs across Europe called “Pizzaman.”

It was about an Italian guy trying to speak English on holiday.

At breakfast, he tells the waitress (in a very strong Italian accent):

👉 “I wanna two pieces of toast.”

She only brings him one piece. So he tries again:

👉 “I want two piece.”

The waitress glares at him:

👉 “Go to the toilet.”

“You no understand,” he insists, “I want two piece on my plate.”

And she snaps:

👉 “You better not do THAT on your plate!”
😂😂😂

The whole song is just one big joke about how bad pronunciation can lead to disaster.

(“I wanna fork on the table.” → “You better not f*ck on the table!”)
(“I wanna sheet on the bed!” → “You better not sh*t on the bed!”)

Funny? Yes.

But also a very real problem for language learners.

If you don’t pronounce Spanish correctly…
😬 You’ll get confused looks.
🙊 You might make embarrassing mistakes.
👂 And worst of all—your listening skills will suffer too.

So… how do you improve your Spanish pronunciation?

🎶 #1 Learn the unique sounds of Spanish

Yeah, yeah, I know.

“But Spanish and English have the same alphabet!”

Sure… but that’s VERY misleading.

An English “r” (like in red) sounds nothing like a soft Spanish r (pero)—and sounds ABSOLUTELY NOTHING like a hard Spanish r (rojo).

From the outside, Spanish and English look the same…

But once you dive in, it’s like discovering a whole new world of sounds. 🌍✨
👉 Erase your assumptions and learn the 24 Spanish sounds.

🎧 #2 Listen to LOTS of native audio
Mastering individual sounds is one thing…
But blending them into words with natural Spanish intonation is another.

How do you do that?

👂 Immerse yourself in native Spanish audio—constantly.
The more you hear it, the more natural it’ll feel.

🎤 #3 Record yourself speaking
Remember the first time you heard a recording of your voice in English and thought:
“NO WAY I sound like that.”

Well…

Multiply that by three when you try it in Spanish. 😬

But trust me—it works.

📱 Record yourself, listen, and compare it to a native speaker.

You’ll instantly spot where you’re slipping back into English pronunciation habits.

Feel Stuck in Spanish? 🇪🇸

Be honest—does this sound like you? 👇

✅ You learn new words but freeze when trying to use them.
✅ Grammar feels like a puzzle with missing pieces.
✅ Speaking? Yeah… not happening.

If that hits home, the problem isn’t you—it’s lack of structure.

With the right plan, you’ll actually use what you learn and start making real progress.

🎯 Learn smarter, not harder!

Why Most Spanish Textbooks Should Be Doused in Gasoline & BURNED! ⛽🔥

Once upon a time…

In a country far, far away…

I was sipping an espresso in a hotel lounge, grading one of my student’s Spanish assignments, when a waitress walked up and asked,

“Whatcha doing?”

“Spanish,” I told her.

“Oh wow!” she said. “I could NEVER learn Spanish. Just couldn’t get my head around it.”

“It’s actually pretty simple,” I explained, “once you know the right words to learn.”

“What d’ya mean?” she asked.

“Well…”

Schools do this weird thing where they teach you useless words first—words you will NEVER use in real life.

But if you focus on the small handful of words you ACTUALLY use… it’s so much easier.

She tilted her head, confused.

“Put it this way,” I said, holding up the assignment.

“This student right here has worked in Mexico and Spain, yet probably still doesn’t know the word for ‘pencil sharpener’.’”

And suddenly, she shrieks:

“¡¡¡¡SACAPUNTASSSS!!!!!”

We both burst out laughing.

My point was proven.

She couldn’t speak any Spanish, yet somehow knew "sacapuntas." Meanwhile, my students—who have learned enough Spanish to work professionally and drink pulque with Mexicans—probably couldn’t tell you the word for “pencil sharpener” if their lives depended on it.

(Because who even uses pencils anymore?! 🤷‍♂️)

Moral of the story?

When you're a beginner, DON’T waste time memorizing useless words.

Most textbooks are packed with them. 🤦‍♂️ Douse them with gasoline and burn them, IMHO.

Instead, focus on the words you’ll actually use!

Here’s a fun Spanish learning hack for you:

Did you know that although there are around 150,000 words in Spanish…

Just 300 of them make up 65% of all spoken Spanish?! 🤯

Seems like a good idea to master those first… instead of words like “xylophone” and “tortoise,” don’t you think?

Want to learn Spanish smarter, not harder?
