Half a century since it topped charts around the world, this autobiographical album, telling the story of Bernie and me finding our voice in London, is being reissued as a 50th Anniversary Edition, out October 24.
Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy was the first album I’d ever made that was autobiographical, and it was the first time we’d gone into the studio with all the songs already written. We rehearsed it as a band, then went in and cut it more or less live. The band were at their absolute peak and you can hear it on the record. I think it’s the best thing we ever did. The songs were strong, Bernie’s lyrics were brilliant, and the atmosphere at Caribou was perfect. Seeing it go to Number One faster than anything I’d ever released felt like vindication, like the culmination of everything Bernie and I had fought for back in those bedsits in London.
As Bernie says, “Of all our recorded output Captain Fantastic has a very special place in my heart. Obviously, it was emotionally rewarding as it chronicled a very special time in our lives. I’m not by nature one to wallow in nostalgia but hearing this album once again 50 years on reminds me of how very deep our bond of friendship and creativity ran.”
The 50th anniversary edition will be available on 2LP, 2CD, Blu-Ray & Digital, plus Limited 1LP ‘Live at Midsummer Music, Wembley Stadium 1975’ released on vinyl for the first time.
2LP + 2CD contains the original album, previously unreleased session demos and Captain Fantastic Live 2005 performances. Booklets include a newly compiled scrapbook, sleeve notes and the 2LP includes Elton’s never-before-seen 1974 diary entries.

On This Day in 1975... I swapped the piano for the tennis court at the RFK Pro-Celebrity Tennis Tournament in Forest Hills, Queens. Partnering with my friend, Billie Jean King, we played in front of 13,000 fans and nearly collided rackets in the process! 🎾
That summer was a whirlwind. Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy was in the Top 5 on both sides of the Atlantic, “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” was riding high in the US charts, and earlier in the year, I had written “Philadelphia Freedom” for Billie to celebrate her trailblazing spirit.
Just two days later, I was back in Los Angeles playing five shows in three days at the Troubadour, celebrating five years since my American debut.

Back in 1977, stepping onto the stage with Ray was a new chapter, with just the two of us, no band, no bells and whistles - playing the music we loved, together. It was intimate, unpredictable and one of the most freeing experiences of my career. I don't usually listen back to my music, but when revisiting this live album, it just astounded me how great it was!
Available now on CD & Digital, alongside a vinyl repress. The CD and digital editions include a brand new, previously unreleased bonus track, "Goodbye" plus the original twelve-song tracklist personally curated by Elton and additional liner notes.

So sad to hear the news of Ozzy Osbourne passing away.
He was a dear friend and a huge trailblazer who secured his place in the pantheon of rock gods - a true legend. He was also one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. I will miss him dearly. To Sharon and the family, I send my condolences and love.
