Playing the same riff over and over in a tune *should* get repetitive.
But it happens all the time in the blues and it works.
Crosscut Saw, Killing Floor…
A good riff is a good riff.
And it never gets old.

My favorite players still practice regularly.
That’s because you never fully arrive at where you’re trying to go as a guitarist.
I don’t want to arrive. I want to keep moving.
So I practice.

Somewhere along my guitar journey, I stalled out.
I tried books, DVDs and courses but I never got much better.
Nothing worked.
At the same time, I watched the rise of YouTube guitar channels. It seemed like everyone could play things I couldn't.
Every time I reached for new and tougher material, I fell flat. I nearly gave up playing but that didn’t sit right with me.
So I took a step back and wondered what they had that I didn’t. What was I missing?
I started taking a deep look at my playing. Everything about it. I dug deep until I got to the root of the issue.
I found my own personal secret sauce for getting results on the guitar. Even after decades on the guitar, I’m still getting better.
So recently, I wrote an article and filmed a video about what worked for me.
Some of my discoveries may seem obvious. But as a mostly self-taught guitar player, each of the 5 strategies I share were gamechangers for me.

For years my slide solos hovered around a few frets.
I played it safe.
I broke out of my safe zone when I started:
- Focusing on important notes
- Creating melody
- Connecting chords
Tomorrow, I’ll share how to craft a sweet slide solo with over 13,000 Tuesday Blues subscribers.

The Blues progression builds toward the turnaround.
It’s a big deal.
It pays to have plenty in your repertoire. Especially ones that will make you a better player.

There's a tipping point for guitar players where you've learned all the same pentatonic scales and blues scales as everyone else...and guess what?
You sound like everyone else!
Or maybe you know your scales, but can't put them to use in a jam.
If you want to get over the tipping point, you've got to practice. A lot.
Blues Guitar Institute is dedicated to helping guitarists avoid the plateau by sharing tips for effective practicing and of course, note-for-note licks to keep you constantly pushing your blues guitar skills farther.
Get these tips and lessons delivered right to you as they go live by going to:

After you do, shoot me an email and tell me what struggles you're having with your guitar playing right now.
