The initial reason that someone trusts you is the way they feel.
A thing that I have found and learn to do- you should do as well in your marketing- is to understand that people want to see themselves in your marketing.
They don't want to see you. They want to know that you understand how they feel.

š Iām reading a new book... The 16 Word Sales Letter⢠by Evaldo Albuquerque.
Itās going pretty good, Iām liking the stuff. Then the guy insults me. Right there on the page!
And I quote: Never forget people donāt have to read your Shyte! š
Well, if he looked at my marketing, and saw how wonderful I am, he would never say that!
And he is šÆ% correct.
No one has to read my stuff. AND no one has to read yours.
Or watch it or like it or comment on it or ask you to help them.
If you are reading this on social media, I have stopped you from scrolling. š± From looking at pictures or watching interesting things.
You gave me your attention. And I need to let you know whatās in it for you ASAP.
And so do you with your marketing.
Your marketing isn't about you. Building trust with your marketing isn't about you either.
Itās always about your client. š¤ The person who needs what you uniquely have to offer. Who is looking for someone to solve their problem.
And not just any someone, someone they can trust.
If they need you and can trust you, let them know asap.
How? š¤
Your client stories. Your reviews. Sharing how you have been able to help others, just like them, get where they want to go.

š¤µIāve turned my husband into a crazy marketing critic! Now every commercial or social media post, he gives a once-over to see if they are communicating what they sell and who should buy it.
You see so much bad marketing, and from people who paid a lot of money for it and should know better. But they don't!! ā
And then it becomes normal to pay for something that doesnāt work, something you donāt like, and then you start to resent it. Who are these marketers and why do they get to make money peddling crap!?
ā I see this happening all of the time. ā
Hereās the thing, marketing CAN work. And if fact it is supposed to.
Itās supposed to bring in clients; clients that you want to work with and that make you money.

I had surgery two years ago.
It was out of the blue, random.
I was referred to this doctor. I looked at a whole bunch of other doctors, but went into his office, scared to death, sat down in front of him, and here's what he DIDN'T say- how many surgeries he had done, where he was educated, how smart he was, why I should trust him, why I should choose him, how great he was.
Instead, he sat down in front of me and my husband and said, "what questions do you have?". And he let me ask whatever I wanted. My husband asked whatever he wanted. He listened to us! He didn't talk over top of me. He didn't tell me I was wrong. He answered me. He made me feel understood and listened to and safe.
There's something called psychological safety. When you allow someone to feel comfortable and safe, then they start to trust you immediately. Two sessions later, I was letting the man cut me open, right? It was pretty quick. I didn't know him from Adam's house cat.
What situation have you been in when it was very emotional, and how did someone help you feel in order for you to feel safe? To trust them, and then you bought from them?
Where there are tons of options out there for you. You end up going with choosing the person who makes you feel most safe. And allows you to be yourself, um, and you can see yourself in their marketing. Now, how can you help someone see themselves in your marketing?

Once upon a time, not too long ago I found myself clinging to a rock in the middle of the Mediterranean.
There I was, all my snorkel gear on, arms and legs wrapped around a jagged rock as waves crashed all around me.
My husband screamed at me and waved his arms. Those particular rocks are full of sea urchins. Their sharp spikes easily pierce through rubber fins and right into soft feet.
I was in serious trouble.
Hereās the funny thing ⦠I wasnāt in the middle of the sea... and the waves were pretty small. The water under me was about 7 feet deep and the water on the other side of the rock was about two feet deep.
Yet I had convinced myself drowning was imminent.
It amazes me how many times in my business life I have convinced myself that drowning was imminent. And all solutions available were hard and required extreme effort ⦠and my survival was dependent on how tightly I could hold on to perceived safety.
That day in the sea, I gave a few waves and water that only appeared to be deep, a lot of power.
I can swim. I can float. I was wearing gear that allows you to breathe underwater. But I couldn't find enough psychological safety to let go of that darn rock.
We came back to the beach the next day and I gave those rocks a thorough inspection and found that my perceptions werenāt just off- they were ridiculous.
If I had trusted myself, trusted what I know I am capable of, I would have easily swam to safety without sea urchin troubles and a traumatized husband.
Had I trusted myself, believed ME, I would have avoided the extreme stress, burnout and overwork that dominated my sales career- saved myself from the āsafetyā of hard work to earn my values, anxiety medications, and other failed prescriptions that our current business narrative doles out with no warning of the dangers.
Like most folks, failure is what brought me to the place where I can see the dangers clearly.
My sales career didnāt end in a blaze of glory the way it was supposed to if I had just kept digging for that gold! The last three iterations of my business havenāt worked out anywhere near as well as I would have liked, or to the level it would seem possible given my abilities.
At times, I have chased my tail in a fun little circle. It felt safe. It felt like clinging to the real life principles of business.
A + B = C . KPIās and ROI and 123ās are all a function of sweat and math. So are sales. Do the work, put in the numbers, it works if you work it. All of the things we know are true, but the thought of them invokes dread.
Are you lazy? They ask you. NO you answer. And yet ā¦
What if I believed in me to enough to let all of that go? What if the Universe, God and everything were actually benevolent actors. And so you are a benevolent actor? Creator, really.
Creators donāt produce.
But a big rock full of sea urchins in the middle of the sea was the production that I clung to for so long.
If not safe there then where? Surely not on my own. Not where I could just float with the fish and swim how the waves took me. Those things are all out to take me down.
And so I must fight them all- the beauty, the wonderment, the nature of happiness and joy begging me to join them.
That is for another time- when work and production and clinging and fighting have finished. And I, you, we finally deserve it. We have earned it. The right to be happy as fish, swim like dolphins. Play.
What if all of THAT is as misguided as my perceptions of safety? My husband, being comfortable and familiar with that particular sea, easily floated around the rocks to the shallows. Stood on his feet and called to me. Itās safe if you let go!
Itās safe if you let go! Is it? People drown when they are tired or when they panic.
My whole mortgage career was some sort of panic. A long mental and physical list of āwhat ifsā. What if I donāt make my numbers? What if I canāt pay my bills? What if the market is bad next year? What if they changes all of the rules?
What if I fail ⦠if they donāt like me ⦠if I canāt keep doing this ā¦
Those urchins had deadly stings.
Here I am now. Swimming, floating, snorkeling. No rocks no worries.
What has changed?
I trust myself.
It was a process. Two years of inner work just to find me.
Funny thing is, I was always mostly myself. It was more like an unboxing than a clean up. I threw A LOT of beliefs out. Gave some back to the person they belonged to. I will not say that it was hard work.
We are taught to say āit was hardā. Staying the way I was, that was hard. It was hard every day.
Changing was not. It was like breathing new air when you had been locked behind your covid mask. It feels like running through a bigger meadow with more flowers every time I let a block to my happiness go.
The myth of hard work keeps you enslaved to the ideas and values of those who get to define what hard work means.
They lie to you and say āif you donāt stay in perfect discipline, you will end up fat, drunk, and stupid. And thatās no way to go through life!ā You will waste time. You will waste money. You will end up with nothing to show for anything.
Iām so okay with not having anything to show for those kind of people.
AND that doesnāt mean Iām taking a vow of poverty or giving back my favorite Gucci bag. I like first class and I hate bad wine.
Waking up everyday just to prove myself again is the worst type of poverty.
I am, you are, worthy of love and belonging. You have, I have everything needed inside. Nothing to prove. No one to validate. Just to be. You are safe. I am safe. The Universe is in our favor as are the fish and the sea.
Itās about experiencing life. And all of the things it has to offer.

Let's break down how to find those values you're looking for.
It's actually very easy!
Sit back for a minute, and think about your three favorite clients.
For most people, those people pop in their head right away. You loved working with John and his company or you loved selling a home to Joe and Susie, and there are reasons for this.
As you're thinking through it and you're kind of smiling and wishing everybody in the world was just like them, why? Was it the interaction that you had with them? Was it that you guys really got along? You were able to help them quite a bit?
Think through everything about these people and you're going to see commonalities start to pop up as you write these things down- those are the values you should be looking for.

This quote - āWhat you are afraid to let go of controls youā screamed at me from my TikTok feed.
I have been afraid to let go of a few things lately. Proudly, these things are wayyy better quality of things than they used to be!
Itās been a while since I held on to overwork, competing, being cool or following the ābig boysā. What a relief to let those things go!
And I still find myself holding on for the same reason ⦠self-protection.
Sometimes it appears to make good sense to hold on to things that have worked in the past- clients that youāve had for years. Friends or groups that you have been a part of are still good people, they just arenāt headed in your direction any more.
In focusing on staying in my values, I have let go of some āgoodā things that no one would blame me for keeping and a few people said I was dumb to let go.
If it aināt broke, donāt fix it!
Which works great, if you want as-is status. What if you donāt? What if you feel the pull towards something bigger or the pull to grow your business in such a way that requires you grow as a person?
I donāt know about you, but I know for me, when I am self-protecting, itās time to let go of something and move forward.
How do you know? How you feel.
I know they told us not to trust your feelings. Bad Idea! But here's the thing, for adults who know themselves, how you feel tells you everything you need to know.
Hereās an example: A past client just shut down her business and retired, after the last few months were so stressful, she had a major health scare.
We had many conversations over the years of her giving up the stress of clients she didn't want to work with and her being clear on her boundaries. She felt such extreme pressure to help everyone.
Letting go scared her, it didn't seem right. Fighting your feelings can have disastrous effects.
She had massive-income months, but the stress led to more than one trip to the hospital.
"But thatās how this works, Roberta!", she would tell me. Then tried to cut back, but it never worked. Because she couldnāt let go of earning, being worthy of her boundaries, and so making choices that were outside of what the industry standards was not an option for her.
It can feel terrifying to let go of the good, the accepted, the path that got you to where you are now to get to that place where you feel great about what you are doing.
It can feel impossible for your income and success to grow bigger than ever.
And I have never regretted it. Iām betting you wonāt either.

Answer Your Potential Clients Questions
You do this all day in real life via text, email, and face to face conversations. People who may want to hire you are asking you questions.
Which is great! It gives you the opportunity to show you know what you're talking about, that you can be trusted and if you can help the client reach their goals.
But this seems to get lost when it comes to marketing on social media, email and videos.
Here's an simple way to fix that:
Step 1: Answer the question THEY are asking- Your potential client will stop scrolling and read your post if they see it's something they want to know.
Step 2: Answer the way THEY would ask- Your consumer doesn't know jargon or industry terms. Nor do they care to, until they have to.
Step 3: Three places to find the questions they are asking in their words:
This may seem frustrating because the free marketing you are given and social media subscriptions do not post this way.
How can you do this without a ton of research and copy writing lessons?
⢠Look in your sent box (text or email). What questions have your been answering and how where they asked. Post those directly to social media with a little clean up to make it easy to read.
⢠Google a standard question. Then look at the "people also ask". Google is telling you what people are searching for.
⢠Answer that question.
⢠Ask your clients directly what questions they have about your services!
No text book language, jargon, or industry-sounding copywriting necessary. Just your next client getting their biggest questions answered.
