Hey team!

So I have just reviewed Valkyria Chronicles and while its got some issues, I still thoroughly enjoyed my time with it (link below somewhere).

This week I will be retro-reviewing Dragon Age Inquisition from 2014; a game I recall actually loving and clocking at release and am looking forward to seeing how it holds up.

The hope with this experiment will be to announce the upcoming game in advance and I will try to pick ones on sale also (DA is on deep sale right now) so if you are interested in playing it in parallel with me you can do so on the cheap, and feel free to join out discord to discuss among like minds! Its a bit cheesy but I like the idea of encouraging gaming by playing great classics at a low price point...you just have to be willing to pass on FOMO.

Hey team!

Hi all! This week I am 'retro reviewing' Valkyria Chronicles. I figure I had such a blast going back to Alien Isolation that I would do the same, again! Its currently on deep sale on steam and while it originally came out in like 2008, the pc port was 2014...10 years ago.

I dont think I actually clocked it back in the day, but I sank a lot of time in and have fond memories of 'anime band of brothers'. If you havent already, pick it up now and play through it too; would love to hear others' thoughts on the game :)

Cheers,

Scarlet

Hey team!

I know I go back and forth on this a lot...but I have been thinking more and more about the 'ranking system' I attempted earlier in the year. Call me silly, call me stubborn, but the idea (which is to say, review 100 games a year against a strict/equal criteria [money/time] and rank them 1 to 100) I feel still holds value; and with the current sentiment towards 'big journalism' in gaming (both press and review) it might even be more important now/as the year goes on.

So tell me true; should I tuck my tail and give it another go? My vitriol towards the '7,8,9 out of 10' as THE score system is still the same. I HATE this system specifically engineered to be lukewarm and corporate friendly so that access journalism can continue.

I can tweak it and iron out the kinks; was thinking specifically in the long term could 'merge' the 100 rankings between years; might just show what was and wasnt a good year for gaming.

Anyway, feedback welcome. If I am writing this out in the first place I am already leaning that way.

Cheers,

Scarlet

Hi team!

So....I am considering hanging up the score system. I have been getting pushback and while I legitimately think it is a better system than the status quo (ego much) the truth is...people are comfortable. They dont want change.

I will forever be confused by yet another 7 or 8 out of 10, coming out of a 'review house' with 20+ staff reviewers and people thinking that this means...anything?

I really think its all just safe. No one wants to hear the game they like is a 4/10; no matter the rationale. Devs dont want to see it, reviewers are too scared to do it (unless its the popular opinion)...I mean there are literal bonus payouts in game companies based on their metacritic score. An entire system built on getting a mediocre, safe, score.

Hot take: do you actually want me to tell you if X game is worth your time and money MORE than Y...or do you just wanna hear the game you were always going to buy isn't shit? Maybe buyers remorse goes down better if the critic you like makes it ok by giving it a 7. Food for thought...

*For those not across it; I have basically been doing a straight ranking from 1-100. 4 out of 10 doesnt mean your game is bad per se, it just means there are 60 other games that are better that it.

Hi team!

So it seems the reviews are being well received! This is wonderful news as to be honest, I am really enjoying the process more than I thought I would! Just thought I would cover a few things since its been coming up a bit.

I only play the game for X time ($5 to 1 hour) and then I put it down (that said I went down a rabbit hole this weekend on Victoria 3 lol). What I have discovered, and I touched on this in a previous video, is that I am having A LOT more fun putting games down when the clock runs out and just...moving on.

I honestly would encourage people to try this unconventional approach too. You can massage the value point, but honestly, I think a lot of players would be MUCH happier if they just picked up a game on deep sale (or dig into the backlog I know you all have) and just play it until you hit the 'fair rate of exchange between time and money'.

It also helps expose the lop-sided pricing of the market RE AAA vs indie for example. It gets harder to justify expensive games when they burn you out 10 hours in (or run out of content) when you know there are 10 other games a quarter of the price that respect your time as a gamer.

This whole thing is a path towards truly voting with your wallet; and that starts with treating your TIME like its the most expensive commodity that you have (because it is).

Give it a go. Let go. Close the overlay and stop hunting for achievements. Half play a brilliant game and learn to reminisce over the journey and its potential, rather than the ending and its disappointment.

Cheers,

Scarlet

Hi team!

So...I have been loving Return to Moria so far, haters be damned! Its an absolute blast and I am very seriously considering getting a community multiplayer session going. It is up to 8 players (dwarves) and I think it could be a blast. Make sure you join our discord if you are interested in being part of this :)
