🔥 People talk about "Setting BOUNDARIES", but what does that mean? Boundaries are basic guidelines of how you want to be treated – that means learning how and when to say "no". Your personal boundaries are your personal brand – it is your statement about what you will do and what you will not do. Personal boundaries build lasting healthy relationships both at-work and outside-work.
Boundaries can take many forms.
✋ Declining physical contact from a coworker is a physical boundary.
✋ Asking a coworker not to make unreasonable demands on your time is a psychological boundary.
✋ Telling a coworker or friend to return things that they owe you is a material boundary.
✋ Telling a coworker or friend not to put you down is a respect boundary.
✋ Telling your friend how you want them to be reciprocal in helping and supporting each other is an emotional boundary - ironically, when doing business, the first person to support you is a stranger, but when you succeed, everyone is present except for strangers.
One of the most common reasons for not setting boundaries is a fear of conflict. You don’t want to upset people, so you sacrifice your own needs. When you establish healthy boundaries, the people who are used to you being their doormat may get irritated or upset and be unwilling to accept the “new you”. The people who get upset about you setting boundaries are usually the ones who were benefitting from you having none.
Daring to set boundaries is about having the courage for self-care, even when you risk disappointing others. When dealing with someone who doesn't respect personal boundaries, you need to accept that sometimes, you can't control another person's behavior - sometimes you need to distance yourself from those who choose not to respect your boundaries, and don't participate in their unproductive conversations.
People with good boundaries are attractive - they are confident, courageous, and do not hesitate to take risks for important things in their lives.
📣 So, how do you set boundaries without being mean❓
✋ Start by saying “NO”.
✋ Be short and confident in saying “NO”.
✋ Start small and pick something minor to say “NO”.
