Brontƫ Square - Week 1 Yorkshire CAL

Are you a crocheter looking to improve your crochet skills? Or maybe a more experienced crocheter looking for an engaging pattern? From the 6th July 2024 for 18 weeks we will be running a Crochet Along for the Yorkshire Sampler Blanket and we would love you to join us! The blanket consists of 12 different granny square patterns inspired by the beautiful countryside of Yorkshire, joined using a ā€œJoin As You Goā€ technique then edged in a scalloped border. The pattern for the CAL is available via this link: linktr.ee/meemamakes

We are kicking off the first week of the Crochet Along with a square inspired by the writings of the BrontĆ« sisters and a trip to BrontĆ« country. The square is reminiscent of gothic architecture and victorian lace. It only uses single crochets, double crochets, and chains so itā€™s a fairly easy square to start off with.

If you are using a yarn pack for the CAL you will need to make 2 Brontƫ squares in colours B and C.

Donā€™t forget to post your squares using the hashtag #YorkshireCAL

Thankyou so much for all your support and kind comments over the weekend ā¤ļø I am able to do a little work today so I thought I'd share the last post in our colour inspiration series for the Yorkshire CAL. And this palette is special to me because... I am so so SO EXCITED to be joining in with one of my own CALs for the first time!

When I was making the first sample of the Yorkshire blanket, I knew I wanted to join in the CAL and make a bigger version but I just could not decide on a yarn. Then, as I was unpacking following our move I found my huge stash of Stylecraft Naturals Bamboo and Cotton, a beautiful plant-based yarn in softer, chalky colours. This is marketed as a DK weight yarn but it is more of a sport weight in actuality so I am using a 3.5mm hook for my squares and my gauge is approx. 8" per square. I am using 12 shades for the squares and, unlike the yarn packs, I am using 1 colour per design. I'll be making a total of 36 squares for a larger size of the blanket as well. If you want to use this palette too, I am putting the quantities I have below, but as I haven't made this pattern in this weight before I don't know if I might have to buy extra yarn of the background colour so keep this in mind! I only made my final decision last week so hopefully I stick to these colours. What do you think of my choices?

1 ball each of: Pumice 7154, Blossom 7167, Peach 7131, Canyon 7157, Umber 7161, Nutmeg 7147, Dove 7150, Downpour 7151, Ocean Deep 7145, Seafoam 7143, Celery 7155, and Thyme 7156.
Plus 6 balls of Ecru 7128

āŒ LIVESTREAM POSTPONED āŒ

Unfortunately I am not feeling well today, and although I had hoped Iā€™d still be able to livestream, I am going to have to postpone tonightā€™s livestream. Hopefully Iā€™ll be well enough for 7pm tomorrow 30th June but if not I will record as soon as I am well enough. Sorry for any inconvenience ā¤ļø

Our penultimate colour inspiration is 2 colour palettes using some Scheepjes Stone/River Washed yarn. The first is a bright and vibrant colour palette, whilst the second is more muted but still with some beautiful colours. This range of yarn from Scheepjes is a sport weight yarn - so somewhere between a fingering and DK thickness. I recommend using a 3.5mm hook and aim for a gauge of 8" per square. Your yardage will be different to those given in the pattern but should be somewhere between the DK and fingering weight yardages. These aren't available as yarn packs so here are the quantities you'll need:

For the more vibrant colours
2 balls each of Scheepjes River Washed in: Avon 956, Mersey 961, Eisack 957, Steenbras 942, Narmada 962, Po 955, Tiber 958, and Yarra 949
+ 10 balls of Scheepjes Stone Washed in Moonstone 801

For the more subdued colours
2 balls each of Scheepjes Stone Washed in: Yellow Jasper 809, Lepidolite 830, Corundum Ruby 808, Coral 816, Brown Agate 822, Canada Jade 806, Larimar 828, and Blue Apatite 805
+ 10 balls of Scheepjes Stone Washed in Moonstone 801

The next few yarn colour combinations for the Yorkshire CAL that I will be sharing aren't available to buy as a pack but I have put the quantities and colours at the bottom of this post if you fancy getting them yourself!
I like to think of this as a cosy, vintage colour palette, with earthy autumnal colours with some pops of brighter shades mellowed out with a charcoal grey. This beautiful yarn palette almost made itself into the main yarn pack for the CAL but the yarn is a little too fluffy so the stitch definition isn't as good as Stylecraft Special. I would LOVE to see this made into a Yorkshire CAL blanket though. Any takers?

Stylecraft Highland Heathers DK
1 ball each of: Bracken 3747, Lichen 7228, Wild Salmon 3745, Hawthorn 7227, Cairn 3744, Gorse 3743, Terrier 7225, and Marmalade 7224
+ 5 balls of Brose 7230

Today's yarn inspiration is all about MINI SKEINS!

Minis are usually 20g of hand dyed sock yarn and are often available as packs. These minis are fun to collect, and you can go wild with colours. Photographed are the 24 mini skeins I used for my sample of the blanket and were from a range of different dyers, although most of them were from Beehive Yarns. Mini skeins are usually limited edition and this is why you can't buy the yarn pack for my sample blanket. Mini skeins can also be purchased as a yarn advent, so 24 minis opened over 24 days of an advent. If you'd like to see my advent from last year check out this podcast episode:
https://youtu.be/vpsqHidQnzs?si=5PSr_...

If you're new to mini skeins and you're thinking about getting some I have a warning for you: they are so ADDICTIVE! I have linked a few vendors (who will be showing at Yorkshire Yarn Fest and sell online) who currently have mini skeins available to purchase. If you see some like snatch them up before they are gone!!

NOTE: You will not have enough meterage/yardage to complete the squares if you get DK weight 20g mini skeins, only fingering/sock weight.
