R.I.P to an Iconic Bass Player -

Phil Lesh, the legendary bassist from the Grateful Dead, recently passed away. Phil wasn’t just any bassist; he was a game-changer. His unique style and approach to the bass guitar have shaped how we think about playing.

Phil wasn’t just a traditional bassist; his style broke away from the cliche roles, allowing the bass to become a melodic voice within the band. He created dynamic bass lines that shaped the sound of the Grateful Dead. Yes, just as essential to the band's sound as Jerry Garcia's signature lead guitar work. I've never heard another bass player who sounds remotely close to Phil's style.

Lesh also played a crucial role in crafting many of the Grateful Dead's most beloved songs.

Phil Lesh’s legacy lives on through his groundbreaking music and the countless people he inspired. As we celebrate his life, let’s honor the joy and creativity he brought to the world. Thank you, Phil, for everything. You’ll always be remembered in the hearts of bassists everywhere.

Phil Lesh 1940 - 2024

Learning the 3-Finger Technique Changed My Life -

WHAT'S UP BASSISTS!

Conquering the 3-finger technique has revolutionized my playing.

It's opened up lines and speeds I could never achieve with just 2 fingers.

So how do you do this?

The technique feels most natural with the 3-2-1 combo (ring finger, middle finger, index finger). However, you must develop strength and a callous on the ring finger to match the strength of the other two fingers.

Most bassists jump too many steps ahead with this!

Start with basic groups of 3’s with only ONE note to get the technique down, then…

-Move around to different notes

-Have a new note per finger (I like to practice scales this way)

-Try other combos, my favorite is 3212-1321

-Be able to play normal 8th notes without sounding accented. Many bassists struggle using 3 fingers over rhythmic groups of 4’s.

This really is a BEAST of a technique. Give it a go!

Any questions I can help you with?

This Secret Method Transformed How I Play Bass -

WHAT'S UP BASSISTS!

Do you overthink while playing? Do you feel like you do the same ideas over and over again?

Change how you create fills and improvise, and become more melodic with this!

Get ready to learn this fantastic hack...

***Three notes per string scales*** (example with the Major Scale - in E, tab below)

There’s a visual pattern to this as the strings mirror each other and become immediately memorable.

Look at the tab/transcription. You'll notice the E and A strings play the same frets as the D and G strings!

Because of this, mixing and matching random notes is very easy, and it will break you out of up-and-down scale playing. This sounds good for being strictly diatonic! The lowest and highest notes are being played, all without any shifting.

It is meant to be played in the upper register since it is an extended scale pattern that always starts on the first finger.

You don’t need to think about WHAT notes you should be playing and can focus on trying to be creative with the notes within this pattern.

It works with many scales, not just the Major Scale.

Come up with your own combos to create!

*Understand that this is a hack, and I still encourage you to know the intervals you are playing, but it’s an excellent way to introduce “thoughtless” playing.

The Bass Pioneer Who Helped Shape the Metal Genre -

WHAT'S UP BASSISTS!

Have you ever wondered what makes the bass in heavy metal classics so intense and unforgettable?

Who brought a new level of power and precision to metal bass, influencing countless bassists around the world?

Today, we’re talking about…

Steve Harris.

As the founder and primary songwriter for Iron Maiden, Harris revolutionized metal bass playing with his distinctive style. He is best known for his impressive galloping fingerstyle technique.

This fast, rhythmic style drives many of Iron Maiden's songs. It’s called “The Gallop” because it involves a rapid horse-like rhythm. And he plays it with only two fingers.

I use three fingers 🥶

He has penned many of Iron Maiden's biggest hits, such as "The Trooper," "Hallowed Be Thy Name," and "Run to the Hills." His ability to craft memorable songs with compelling bass lines cemented his legendary status.

Best known for playing a Fender Precision Bass. He has used this model extensively throughout his career with Iron Maiden.

What a legend! Try to learn his bass lines!

Stop Feeling Confused When You See These Chords -

WHAT'S UP BASSISTS!

Are you one of those people who gets confused by the difference between these chords?

C

C Major

C Major 7

C△7

"wHaT’s tHaT tRiAngLE?!" Lol.

You're not alone! Let’s break it down and clear up the confusion once and for all!

First up, the Major chord. This is a triad. This should be easy and familiar as it is the blueprint for most chords you’ll learn! This specific triad consists of just three notes: the 1, 3, and 5. On the bass and guitar, these chords have patterns you should memorize.

Here’s how it’s written down, for example, with C:

C (if you see a lone chord, this means it is Major!)

C Major

CM (in some cases, you’ll see a capital M or an abbreviation; CMaj)

Confusion can start when a chord is played as a seventh chord. Both visually and written down. All this means, though, is to add the interval of a 7th to your chord! So if a triad is 1, 3, 5…just add the 7th! It’s only one more note that has been added.

Meet the CMaj7. Seventh chords are a bit more sophisticated, with a hint of complexity thanks to the addition of that B note, the Major seventh. This is just one type of seventh chord.

Here’s how it’s written down, for example, with CMaj7:

C Major 7

CMaj7

C△7 (a triangle always means MAJOR, usually the Major 7th)

CM7

If you listen to these chords side by side, you’ll realize…

The C Major is upbeat and straightforward, while the CMaj7 has a dreamy, almost jazzy feel. That extra note stretches the chord, giving it a fuller, richer sound.

As a bassist, we OUTLINE chords, so we need to know the arpeggios.

Let me know if you need help!
