In his 'Defence of Poesy', Sir Philip Sidney claimed that art was vital because it corrected the flaws in nature. 'Her world is brazen', he wrote. Sidney intended to criticise the study of History, because of its failure to impart virtuous moral lessons, but to me his words are a vindication. If History does not force us to challenge our own assumptions, habits and beliefs, we're not doing it properly. The purpose of this channel, and of my blog, is to engage with the world as it really is, and people as they really are.
