🪴What is soil pH? It's a measure of the acidity of the soil.

🌹Why is it important? The value of soil pH determines how accessible nutrients in the soil will be to your plants. If the pH of your soil is not suitable, your plants will either experience nutrient deficiency or nutrient toxicity.

This is why you need to repot your plants regularly, because the soil pH changes over time.

🌲What Should Be The Soil pH Level? For indoor plants between 5.5 and 6.5

🌲How can you test soil pH? Here is a detailed article i wrote about the best soil pH testers, how to check your soil pH, and much more about soil pH 😊: www.mrhouseplant.com/blog/soil-ph-testers/

🌿Fun Facts about Monstera Deliciosa🌿

🪴The Monstera genus' name comes from the Latin word for "monstrous" or "abnormal". It is speculated that this refers to the plants' unusual leaves.
🪴The other part of the name, Deliciosa, meaning delicious in Latin, refers to the edible and delicious fruits of the plant.
🪴In Peru, people use Monstera's roots to make ropes, and in Mexico, they weave baskets from the roots.
🪴Monstera Deliciosa has a ''joint'', scientifically known as genticulum, that allows the leaves to rotate in search of more light. The ruffles that you can see right below where the leaf starts function as a joint. Not all Monstera leaves have these joints.

HOW TO RECOVER A BIRD OF PARADISE

I completely neglected this plant. It's been in a dark corner for several weeks, without a grow light. One of the stems rotted. Here is how I will recover it:

STEP 1: Move it next to the brightest window in that room, instead of a dark corner. Every foot away from the window exponentially reduces the amount of light

STEP 2: I cut off all the dead leaves (brown and dry). I do not cut off yellow leaves, they are still alive. The plant will take mobile nutrients from that leaf. When it becomes dry, crispy and brown, it's fine to cut it off, the nutrients have been moved away.

STEP 3: I will add a grow light. Some of the leaves are above window height so they won't get any natural light. I'm using sticky ceiling hooks, so I don't have to drill holes. I'll leave them overnight for the glue to dry out before putting the grow light up

STEP 4: A full repot. The plant hasn't been repotted in over 3 years. I always recommend annual repotting, but hey...life sometimes gets in the way :)

STEP 5: Watering once the soil has fully dried out, all the way to the bottom of the pot. BOPs tolerate dry soil better the constantly wet soil, so I suggest going on the dry side.

I use a chopstick to check the soil to see if it's time to water. Stick it all the way to the bottom of the pot, if it comes out clean and dry, it's time to water.

To recap:
1️⃣Light is the most important factor, you want to get the light right
2️⃣Full repot, to make sure the roots are in good condition
3️⃣Proper watering (once the soil is fully dry)
4️⃣Inspect and treat for pests (i skipped this because the plant has no pets)

You can see everything I did for this plant today in my YT stories, as well as IG, FB and TikTok stories 🙂

I spent 2 full days testing 4 Barrina grow lights (over 10 hours writing). I'm happy to say, unlike most grow lights on Amazon, Barrina actually makes good grow lights. However, there are some better alternatives. Read my blog post for a full review 🙂
