I'm not sure what the future of PieterExplainsTech will look like.
Don't worry, I still like making videos about a wide range of technology topics. But the channel has hit a snag. Making the same type of videos I used to make in the old days doesn't make sense anymore. There are a ton of knowledgeable YouTubers explaining every possible network protocol and providing tons of tutorials about topics I'd want to make a video about. YouTube has almost everything, which means it has never been easier to pick up new skills. That's really cool. It does mean that I'd just be the 61th YouTuber to explain Git rebases or the principles behind CORS, trying to fulfill a need that has already been filled. I like having a sense of purpose and unfortunately, I don't think I can keep making a difference in that way.
While I always make videos that interest me, I cannot sustain a complex production process that leans heavily on graphic design for an audience that declined about 50% since I started making new stuff. According to YouTube's stats, none of my new videos had a lasting impact. So I think I'd like to shift the channel towards things that haven't been done before. This is scary. Perhaps it's not what you've come to expect from me. Suppose I start introducing fun novelty videos alongside the more traditional videos, I might disappoint some of you who are looking for substance. Staying the same is not sustainable, changing is hard. That's the gist of it.
Regardless of what may come, whether you've been following this channel since the early days or you recently found it, I'm grateful for all of you. Thank you.
