Chillout is both slower house, some forms of trance music, ambient, as well as nu jazz, trip-hop, downtempo or instrumental hip-hop. The term was born in the 1990s from the slang word for relaxing.
Although chillout is often understood as music for listening and relaxing, there is a culture closely related to this trend, found in many clubs and bars, most often with futuristic decorations or in a retro style.
