Olympic horse sports need to change because the welfare of the horses is being overlooked. These animals are pushed to perform at incredibly high levels in eventing, dressage, and show jumping, often leading to serious injuries, stress, or even death. Horses don’t have the ability to consent to these intense competitions, and time and time again pro riders ignore the few pain signals a horse can communicate with. Despite the FEI’s rules(that the FEI doesn’t even care to strictly enforce and ban people who don’t follow them), we still see abusive practices like overtraining, the use of harsh equipment, and sometimes even doping. What’s worse, the enforcement of animal welfare regulations is inconsistent, and punishments for violations are often too lenient. The bottom line is that horses are treated as tools for human achievement, rather than as sentient beings who deserve proper care and respect. This needs to change, either through stricter regulations or a reevaluation of their role in Olympic sports.
I refuse to stay silent after the horrendous Olympics this year even though it was a few months ago.

The FEI (Federation Equestre Internationale) has a serious problem with how it handles animal welfare and enforces its own rules. Despite claiming to prioritize horse well-being, the organization consistently fails to crack down on abusive practices, like overtraining, excessive use of harsh equipment, and doping. We see horses pushed to their limits in high-pressure competitions, with little accountability for injuries or mistreatment. Even more frustrating, the FEI’s enforcement is often inconsistent—wealthy competitors with access to the best horses and trainers can bend the rules, creating an unfair, elitist system. The lack of transparency and the slow response to modern concerns about animal rights leave the FEI looking out of touch and out of step with what should be a sport based on fairness and respect for the animals involved.

I’m starting to get really worried about Eliza. She doesn’t seem to be getting better very fast. I miss riding her so much. I’m also scared that when she does come back I won’t be able to ride her and they will want me to ride Nina instead. I just want to ride her and spend time with her again 😭
