🚨 You wouldn’t know it from this photo, but this carp’s head and gills are covered in silt stains – proof of how much they love feeding in it. Silt is full of natural food, and carp will happily bury their heads deep to find a meal. That’s why fishing in silt is so effective. You don’t need to overthink rigs or presentation – if your bait is good, they’ll find it.
⭐ Just 24 hours after discovering a new 30-acre public lake, a little pre-baiting, and fishing into the wind with a simple mono hair rig and inline running lead, I was holding this stunner. No shows, no feature finding, barely any info to go on – just trust in the process. I couldn’t even feel the lead down, but it didn’t matter. This approach keeps delivering, time and time again.

I’ve always loved fishing inline leads with supple braid at short to medium range. They are super effective. But I wanted to see if I could push them to the limit and get them working at range.
✅ My setup: a distance-shaped inline lead matched to the TC of my rod (3.5lb TC = 3.5oz lead). Mounted on a short solid PVA bag leader. Quick loop-to-loop connection to 0.35 mainline means I’m fishing faster, with no bulky knots and no shock leaders.
✅ To keep things aerodynamic, I stripped the rig right back: 0.45 mono hooklink, out-turned eye hook, 20mm bottom bait. No anti tangle sleeves, no sinkers.
✅ The hookbait is pre-soaked and rolled in salt so it pumps out attraction in the silt. No PVA bags or sticks so that I can fish in all weathers.
▶️ The result? 3 takes on the first session of a brand new 30 acre public water.

Most of us are never taught how to cast, we just have a go and through practice, we get better. However, like many things in carp fishing, there are various little details that can help you become more accurate or cast further. In this video, I go through all the different aspects of the casting technique and how to get more distance and more accuracy quickly. https://youtu.be/d4-rp18jNdM watch video on watch page

After 7 blanks on the trot, and zero signs of carp activity, this common had me grinning like a Cheshire 😸 I didn’t change my approach as I know it works, it was just a case of hanging in there until something happened. It was a funny bite as well. I thought it was a bream or a chub and it wasn't until a minute had passed that something pulled back with some force. During that time, even though the carp didn’t pull against the clutch, he was nailed and couldn't shake the barbless hook ➡️ I fish this way because the running lead was taking care of business while I was coming up to speed with the take. It is such a devastatingly simple and effective technique 👊

If you’re looking to fish sweetcorn or maize at long range or in flowing water, this is a good option: a bait loop style rig tied with 0.50 mono snag leader and a running rig. The corn is threaded onto a piece of floss and tied to the bait loop 🎯

Hi, I’m Matt, fishery manager, engineer and passionate carp angler. This channel is about helping you catch carp with in-depth tutorials.
I’ve been carp fishing since I was a boy. In 2011, I bought my own lake in France, Beausoleil Carp and Cats. It’s a 4 acre estate lake and half of the stock has been fished for for 20 years, so our carp are very good at spitting rigs! Over the years, the lake has helped me improve my skills and create some of my own tricks to fool a wily carp.
Between my own fishing, my experience as a fishery manager and meeting hundreds of anglers, I have continued to learn about our craft and about all those details that can transform a session.
As well as the free videos on this channel, I offer one-on-one tuition by video call. I also run tutorial sessions for guests visiting the lake where I share all my tips that not only work wonders at Beausoleil but will make you an even better angler wherever you fish.
Get in touch if you want to know more 😊
