A Common Mistake Arabic Learners Make

Many people who set out to learn Arabic have big ambitions. They sign up for courses, study hard, and invest their time into mastering the language. But here’s something surprising: when they finally get to an Arab country, they realize... no one is speaking the Arabic they’ve learned!

This happens to so many learners. They dive into *Modern Standard Arabic* (Fus’ha), the formal version of Arabic used in writing, news, and official speeches. It’s incredibly valuable for reading books, understanding the news, and engaging in formal writing. However, daily conversations, the way people greet each other, ask for directions, or simply chat over coffee—it’s a whole different world!

Imagine the shock when they confidently speak to locals and are met with puzzled faces. Arabs appreciate the effort, but they often don’t speak in Modern Standard Arabic in everyday life.

At AlRamsa Institute, we guide our students to embrace the dialects, especially Emirati Arabic, which is spoken in the UAE. Understanding the difference between formal and daily language is key. By learning dialects, students bridge the gap between their studies and real-life conversations, and they no longer have to worry about being misunderstood.

So, for those just starting out: Modern Standard Arabic is great for reading and writing, but if you want to connect with people, laugh, and share stories, learning the spoken dialect is essential.

Have you experienced this, or are you still figuring it out? Share your thoughts in the comments!

In the UAE, the culture around shaking hands between males and females is influenced by traditional and religious norms, emphasizing respect and modesty. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

1. **Wait for the Woman to Initiate**: In many cases, it is customary for the man to wait for the woman to extend her hand first. If she does not offer her hand, a verbal greeting and a slight nod are appropriate.

2. **Respect for Personal Boundaries**: Physical contact between unrelated men and women is generally minimized in public. Understanding and respecting these boundaries is important.

3. **Professional Settings**: In business environments, there may be more flexibility, but it is still crucial to follow the lead of your Emirati counterpart. Many Emirati women in professional settings are comfortable shaking hands with men, but it is always best to be observant and respectful.

4. **Alternative Greetings**: If a handshake is not appropriate, a respectful nod, a verbal greeting like “salam alaykum” (السلام عليكم), or placing the right hand over the heart can be used to convey respect and greeting.

5. **Cultural Sensitivity**: Being aware of and sensitive to these cultural norms demonstrates respect and helps build positive relationships.

In summary, the key is to be observant and respectful, allowing the woman to decide whether or not to engage in a handshake.

Let me share with you how I feel about this book. I was working on this book while being pregnant with my daughter Meera.
I realized that publishing a new book and having a baby aren’t that different, because you experience similar feelings and emotions in both experiences. You get tired , you feel exhausted, but you have to keep going, you have to finish what you started.
Every stage of writing and editing this book had reminded me of pregnancy trimesters. One day you wake up feeling so energetic and ready to get everything done , the next day you wake up with your body feeling heavier than ever that you can barely move a finger
‏You learn as you go, And it’s much more than you already knew , and all you know is that you need love and support from those you care about , Because the love and support we receive from our beloved ones is what changes the game for us
Publishing this book and having my daughter Meera were the most challenging but the best things in 2023.
