Punjab Government Reduces Court Fees on Directives from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif

The Punjab Government has announced a significant reduction in court fees, following directives from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. The decision comes in response to concerns raised by lawyers and citizens over the rising costs of legal processes.

Chief Minister Sharif instructed federal and provincial law ministers, Azam Nazir Tarar and Sohaib Ahmed Bherth, to consult with key stakeholders and find a resolution. A high-level meeting, chaired by the ministers and involving prominent legal figures, resulted in the approval of the new fee structure.

Under the revised system, certified copies of civil court orders will now cost Rs 100, high court orders Rs 500, and Rs 10 per page. Fees for review applications and other court-related procedures have also been reduced. This move is aimed at making justice more accessible and affordable for all.

Punjab Govt Ends Rs14/unit Electricity Subsidy for Islamabad Under IMF Pressure

In a significant policy shift, the Punjab government has announced the withdrawal of the Rs14 per unit electricity subsidy for
consumers in Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), following pressure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Effective from September, this change will impact electricity bills, aligning with the IMF's conditions under the ongoing loan program. The decision, confirmed by the Islamabad Electricity Supply Company (IESCO), reflects the federal government's broader strategy to raise electricity prices by up to 51%.
While Punjab consumers will continue to receive the subsidy until September 30, the IMFโ€™s directive to halt subsidies aims to meet program requirements.

Minister for Petroleum Division Musadik Masood Malik announced in the National Assembly on Thursday that petroleum prices in Pakistan have decreased by Rs47.54 per litre since May.
Malik explained that Pakistan acquires fuel at international market rates but benefits from discounts and extended payment terms from friendly countries.
He emphasized that international market fluctuations and dollar-rupee parity influence local prices. The minister assured that reductions in global fuel prices are passed on to the public.
Efforts are underway to increase the tax-to-GDP ratio to reduce the petroleum levy. A further reduction of Rs10-11 per litre is anticipated from September 15.

X (formerly Twitter) has been restored in #Pakistan after a seven-month hiatus
The #Sindh High Court (SHC) was informed by a PTA lawyer that social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, has been restored for Pakistani users.
The official request for the ban on X has been withdrawn, ending the block that began in February.
The court has adjourned petitions against the ban for two weeks.
Although X is reportedly accessible again, users are experiencing issues accessing the platform.
The ban was imposed after the February 2024 elections due to allegations of election fraud, with many users relying on VPNs to access X.

This decision follows a recent surge in viral videos featuring police personnel.
The ban includes platforms like TikTok and Facebook, aiming to curb the practice of officers engaging in social media activities during work hours.
The Inspector General of Punjab Police has introduced strict guidelines prohibiting officers from sharing personal, political, or religious content online.
Violations will result in disciplinary action, and all official communications must go through designated channels.
Regional officers are tasked with enforcing these new rules.
