Engines is about the plane you fly throughout the day.
When I was a small child my grandpa and I would fly toy planes over the white living room rug and call it the frozen tundra. You didn’t want to run out of fuel or lose a dogfight while traveling over the tundra…
I feel as though as I walk around each day, flying over the bedroom floor tundra, the bathroom floor tundra, the wooden floor tundra… there’s still a plane in front of me.
It’s like a video game though, sometimes the plane is in front of you as if you are watching a movie… sometimes you’re flying the plane from the cockpit. Sometimes you feel like a passenger. Sometimes you feel like a crying baby… the smelly person… the old snoring grandma. Sometimes you feel like a carryon bag stuffed with fantasy novels and sex toys or the drugged-up-dog in its cage next to the oversized bags and golf clubs…
Sometimes you’re the stewardess, wearing perfectly drawn eyeliner and mascara while serving Biscoff cookies on a red eye flight to CVG.
The journey isn’t defined by the distance traveled or the destination; the journey we are on becomes complete when we figure out how to enjoy ourselves surrounded by people that piss us off.
We were born after the ship took flight and we’ll die before it lands; whatever engine powers this plane is one to be reckoned with and I’m pretty impressed by it.

The potency in this body of work lies within the environment it was born out of. The vocal tracks and guitar takes and drum sounds you hear were all recorded in the same house as a two-and-a-half-year-old, a one-week-old, and my wife Carolyn. Captured during infrequent windows of silence…
I wanted to write and record a “protest record” but couldn’t figure out who or what I was protesting. All I had inside was anger with no exhaust… The US Government has earned only a portion of my anger, the Church has written me off as hard-hearted and self-absorbed, my friends and family have shown me nothing but love (they certainly don’t deserve my anger), and neither do I…
but I suppose the Pearl kit, the Precision Bass, and the Les Paul Standard were all sort of built to be used with a little anger behind them.
These are five songs about being mad, being sad, being disgusted, being utterly relieved, being queer, being sick, being humbled, being thankful. This record was created the week after my second son was born and the week after Donald Trump claimed the White House and the week I had a camera measure the size of blood clots in my body.
I wrote and recorded everything in these tracks with minimal rehearsal, minimal takes, minimal editing, and minimal A&R because the medium of the message here is urgency. When I have something elegant to say I’ll say it with elegance; but, when I need to shout about my confusion, it’s going to be fast and weird and rock’n’roll.
At our core, we create for an audience of one: ourselves, and the quicker we come to reckon that, it becomes easier for us to evolve. I love how these songs turned out. Mission accomplished. But now I need to make more. Mission restarts.

This record currently exists in its entirety, on YouTube; I’ll be sure to let you all know as soon as it makes its way to other digital streaming platforms. If you feel compelled… led by the spirit… to pay money toward something in exchange for listening to music I hilariously busted my ass to create… donate to GLSEN and/or The Wounded Warrior Project.

Happy Black Friday. Here are my latest, shortest and sweetest, musical creations. An EP titled “Uhmerica” in which I wrote and recorded everything inside my house, the week after the 2024 Presidential election, as well as the first week of my child’s life. I have no idea what compelled me to make a record during this time but, my body and brain forced it out so, it must mean something. More tids and tads to come for Uhmerica - for now, all 5 songs are uploaded on to YouTube; listen, enjoy, and if you’d like to pay - donate some cash to GLSEN or The Wounded Warrior Project.
