πREVIEW: SONIC RACING CROSSWORLDS released two days ago. It's a kart racer with high-speed, frantic action. Here are my thoughts after playing for 30+ hours. Share your opinion in the comments!
π’ The controls feel really good. There's a sense of arcadey action here that's much stronger than in most kart racers; the game is always pushing you forward and into the action. It feels very distinct from the first moment of play, something few kart racers achieve.
π’ Potential for skill expression is high. From the gadget and kart customizations to the number of things happening every moment (boost opportunities, items, rings, vehicle transformations, shortcuts), you never feel like you're just driving and waiting for the next corner. It's a total opposite approach to the wider tracks and fewer corners of more modern Mario Kart titles, yet somehow it also manages to feel less punishing.
π’ The CrossWorlds feature causes lap 2 of each race to take place on another randomly selected track. It seems gimmicky, but the variety it adds to races is a ton of fun. Lap 3 then returns to the original track and opens up new routes, so every lap feels distinct.
π’ Online play works very well for the first time in a Sonic racing title. It's easy to play with friends on other platforms with crossplay and while the netcode isn't always perfect, it's more than good enough.
π’ The soundtrack is full of memorable tunes, both original and remixes of past Sonic tracks. I really like how you can customize the music that plays during races from a nifty album-centric user interface.
π’ The gadget system allows for truly unique experimentation. You have up to six gadget slots to fill with modifiers that adjust your gameplay. These range from small changes, like gaining rings from air tricks, to large playstyle changes like gaining a drift boost instantly when you switch drift directions. This system really helps the game stand out, it's implemented excellently.
π’ A live-service model is used and seems to be done well here. A consistent stream of collaborations with other franchises for the foreseeable future is a fun way to keep the game alive.
π’ Alongside the vast array of characters, the game also offers a wealth of kart customization options - you can mix and match the front and back halves of karts, recolor them, and change their materials. Karts and characters have clear stats that can be viewed at any time during customization.
π‘ There are a large number of items with a variety of effects. Unfortunately many share similar roles and also hit very hard. The item design sacrifices strategy for chaos.
π‘ Tracks are all fun, but can be a little simple. The game is focused on keeping you moving forward in the race at all times, so even the later tracks don't get very difficult.
π‘ The visuals always look nice, but aren't anything exceptional. There's a lack of options on PC for standard modern PC graphics features (i.e. upscaling, higher frame rates than 60).
π΄ The game lacks a compelling single player mode outside of grand prix. Every prior Sonic racing game had some sort of mission or story mode, but disappointingly there's no equivalent here.
π FINAL THOUGHTS: Sonic Racing CrossWorlds is a fantastic kart racer that somehow manages to feel distinct in the genre. The vibes are excellent, it has a ton of depth, and it's hard not to be having fun the whole time. The lack of dedicated single player content drags it down, though.
π― SCORE: 9/10

Mario Kart World got a new update with some great adjustments!
β In Free Roam, P-Switches and Peach Coins you've found are now marked on the map, and you can even fast-travel to P-Switches.
β A new way to unlock NPC drivers has been added: pull drivers into a UFO to unlock them! To make this easier, UFOs now appear more often.
β In Online Play, you can finally join friends in Knockout Tour, and 3-lap races will show up more frequently.
You can check out all the other changes in the second picture.
So, what do you think? Will you go for 100% in Free Roam now?
