Your Spanish probably isn't as stuck as you think. Here's a fun way to remind yourself of how much you've learned:
Go watch a video in a language you haven't studied. Listening to someone speak Finnish or even French will make it obvious how much your Spanish has progressed by comparison.
It's a reminder of how foreign Spanish probably sounded to your ears at the start -- which means you have in fact been taking steps forward, even when it doesn't feel like it.

Makes my day getting messages like this! Alyson has been part of my Confident Spanish Pronunciation course for around 9 months now, and has put in lots of hard work to get to this point â where she's getting compliments and feels more and more at ease when speaking.

Many of you have asked me to film more videos that are all in Spanish. So here's the first!

I'd love to hear what you think. Let me know what you prefer, and if you have any suggestions on how my videos could be more useful to you.
I will probably stick to English for topics where I think explaining from an English speaker's point of view is helpful (like grammar or pronunciation). But for videos like these, I'm thinking I'll do them in Spanish.
Thanks for watching!

If your Spanish learning is full of distractions, itâs like trying to drive a boat while some subversive co-captain drills holes into the hull and siphons gas from the engine.
The things you're learning barely stick â you take three steps forward and two steps back.
A lack of focus hurts your ability to retain what you learn and make sense of challenging concepts.
On the other hand, 30 minutes of focused learning can be worth more than 60 minutes interrupted by Instagram checks, email replies, and quick household tasks. This is great news, since you probably don't have unlimited time to spend on Spanish.
Easier said than done, though.
But recently, I've been trying a new strategy that's helping with both language learning and work (in fact, Iâm doing it right now while writing this). Itâs made such a difference for me that I wanted to share it so you can apply it to your Spanish learning.
Itâs so easy I canât believe Iâd never done it before. All you need is a timer (not your cell phone), a pen, and a piece of paper.
I'll be sharing exactly how to do it in tomorrow's edition of Saturday Spanish, my free weekly newsletter.

Youâll get more out of the time you have, and youâll remember more along the way.

Thereâs an important truth that all Spanish learners need to be reminded of periodically đđź
Ignoring it leads to (1) poor memory and (2) being stuck translating your thoughts from English into Spanish.
That truth is this: you'll never know all the words.
Sounds obvious, but it's not uncommon for learners to compulsively look up unknown words, in the hopes that they'll build a vocabulary that covers them in any possible situation. I know because I've done this myself A LOT.
There will always be thousands of Spanish words you're unfamiliar with... And thatâs alright.
Just like in your native language, youâll learn to express yourself by working around the words you donât have at your disposal.
If you fall into the trap of looking up every unknown word, you wonât develop that skill. Instead, youâll feel like you canât stop âthinking in Englishâ.
Here's how I suggest you approach it instead: look at unknown words like the thousands of strangers in Times Square.
Some of them are just there to distract you and trick you into eating at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.
Others are fine people, but youâd never connect with them.
And others could be good friends, if you took the time to get to know them.
Your job as a Spanish learner is to look at this mass of people streaming by you each day and figure out which ones are potential friendsâŚ. and then treat them like it, by taking a minute to get to know them.
If you do this, you will:
đReduce that gnawing feeling of not knowing enough words
đ Build better recall for the words you do learn
đ Learn to focus your attention on what matters to you
But if you ignore this, you waste time on words youâll never need and will likely forget in an hour.

There are 3 steps I suggest you follow to reign in this "lookup reflex" and start remembering the words that matter to YOU.
I'll be sharing those steps in tomorrow's edition of Saturday Spanish, my free weekly newsletter.
