Agree if the crime was done only once, but is it possible? If it occurs repeatedly, such as a serial killer case, by just "let it rot on itself", it's just the same as knowing before our eyes that there will be another victim and we let it happen. Don't we feel guilty?
Not retaliating is still acceptable, but it doesn't mean letting it rot on itself, or in other words, letting the next victims continue to fall. Trying to stop the crime also doesn't mean that we ambitiously take revenge, right?
Recently, it has gone viral on social media that we are also reqiured to be responsible for what we don't do, responsible for letting the next victim happen.
