David, 49, arrived in the UK in 2001 after fleeing political persecution and human rights abuses in Kenya. After living in the UK for many years he was detained during the process to claim asylum. He says the detention left him with overwhelming fear and mental health problems.
In a new report the British Red Cross is calling for:
* The process of immigration reporting to be overhauled and replaced with community-based alternatives.
* A limit of 28 days on the length of time someone can be detained for – some people have been detained for as long as two years.
* An end to the detention of vulnerable people, including pregnant women.

The British Red Cross is a volunteer-led movement that connects those who have kindness to share, with the people who need it most.
Whenever a humanitarian crisis occurs in the UK or overseas, the Red Cross is always one of the first organisations on the scene thanks to our local volunteers.
