A very happy (belated) birthday to the great Vincenzo Bellini! One of my favorite composers, and a true genius of the bel canto era, Bellini was born in Sicily on November 3rd, 1801. His compositions are known for their seemingly endless melodies and masterful writing for the human voice. In particular his operas Norma, I Puritani, and La Sonnambula are staples of the standard repertoire, with Il Pirata, I Capuleti e i Montecchi, and Beatrice di Tenda also receiving regular productions. It is an immense tragedy that this great genius died at the very young age of 33. One can only imagine what masterpieces he would have given us had he lived a full life. I’ve attached a playlist with my uploads of Bellini excerpts here.
