Renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal, a pioneer of India's parallel cinema, passed away at 90, leaving an enduring legacy that transformed Indian storytelling. With masterpieces like Ankur, Manthan, and Nishant, he brought rural struggles and societal issues to the forefront, using cinema as a mirror to reflect the complexities of India's socio-political landscape.
Beyond his artistic achievements, Shyam Benegal was a mentor to many, nurturing talents who shaped Indian cinema's evolution. His work earned him numerous accolades, including the Padma Bhushan, and his contribution to the arts remains unparalleled. As a tribute to this legendary figure, Shri Atul Tiwari, a mentee and close collaborator of Benegal, authored 'Maestro - A Tribute to Shyam Benegal at 90', a heartfelt and personal homage to the filmmaker. Atul Tiwari had the honour of gifting the book to Benegal on his 90th birthday, a moment that was even more poignant when the book was launched at the Metaphor Lucknow Lifest 2024 alongside filmmakers Imtiaz Ali, Sudhir Mishra and Prakash Jha.
While the sadness of Shyam Benegal's passing lingers, Atul Tiwari finds solace in having presented this tribute while the maestro was still with us. A true legend, Shyam Benegal Ji's vision and humanity will continue to inspire generations of filmmakers, artists, and dreamers worldwide.
