The Science on ScreenÂŽ grant program, an initiative of the Coolidge Corner Theatre in partnership with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, brings science to the cinema to enhance scientific and film literacy.
At grantee cinemas, museums, and community film organizations across the Unites States, Science on Screen series creatively pair in-theater screenings of classic, cult, science fiction, and documentary films with lively presentations by notable experts from the world of science, engineering, technology, and mathematics. Each film is used as a jumping-off point for a speaker to introduce current research or technological advances in away that engages general audiencesâfrom the role of the amygdala in the zombie brains of Night of the Living Dead to how far epidemiology has come since The Andromeda Strain.
Launched at the Coolidge in 2005 and nationwide in 2010, Science on Screen expanded to sponsor 86 cinemas in 40 states.
