America’s Gilded Age provides many relevant parallels to India today. Industrial giants like John Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan, Andrew Carnegie, and Cornelius Vanderbilt would work closely with the state to establish industrial sectors across America.
They would violently face off against organized labor, with the US government frequently taking their side.
The Pullman Strike of 1894 provides the most exemplary example of this, with the federal government sending military troops to quell a railway strike. Labor Day would be given in the bloody aftermath as a fig leaf to cover the violence.
Deng Xiaoping’s legendary capitalist pivot in Communist China was marked by strident violence to force China’s industrialization and market orientation. Chaebols in South Korea and Japan’s large family-owned conglomerates (Zaibatsu) would be the vanguard of industrialization.
Today, all of the above would be called tyrannical, corrupt, and anti-poor. But these countries had the luxury of a more malleable press, lack of internet access, and less foreign interference in affairs.
India simply does not.

The next 10 years will be some of the most crucial of 🇮🇳's existence. The world cannot ignore:
-A $4T economy; soon go to $5T & perhaps even $6T
-The 4th largest economy; soon be 3rd
-A BILLION man middle-class
Many will want to prevent this rise, both within & without India...

Market forces are driving the spread of 3 big things in Indian society:
1. Hinglish
2. Inter-Caste Marriage
3. Non-Vegetarianism
Zealots of either side claim pro/anti-gov conspiracies for all of these. But it won't matter long term.
Capitalistic & cultural evolution is winning out here.

One fascinating aspect of the completely normalized anti-Indian racism now is how Indians react to it.
It is usually some version of "I know our culture has issues, but we don't deserve this hate."
Now contrast that with the reactions of say Blacks, Jews, Muslims, etc... when it comes to hate campaigns against their identity:
Do you ever see that beginning phrase - "I know our culture has issues but..." ?
You don't. And that little phrase is extremely telling.
Even well-adjusted & not self-hating Indians use that phrase (I've used it!). But I just realized that NO ONE else uses that qualifier before condemning very real & massive sentiments of hatred towards there own people.
It is certainly something to introspect on for us...

While rigid forms of caste have won out, what about alternative versions?
In the Mahabharata, an epic that truly defines India, the wise sage Yajnavalkya presents an alternative perspective on caste.
Yajnavalkya claims that since all varnas (castes) are born of the primordial supreme being and essence of Brahman, they are all Brahmins. He further goes on to say that the ultimate knowledge of liberation (moksha) can be taken from people of all varnas and even from the lowest of the low in caste.
In some ages and places, this idea of honoring a lower caste as a Guru is a blasphemous statement. And indeed we find similar “equalizing” verses across scriptures, but ultimately this is a heterodox position for much of Indian history.
Nonetheless, what these disparate verses have in common is a core theological concept.
All lean on the absolute and divine nature of the Atman, the unchanging and pure soul-like essence that travels across bodies facing endless births and deaths in a quest for liberation.
The logic is that worldly differences such as caste should be secondary to the inherent divinity of the Atman in each human. Thus, we find a source for the radical nostalgia of caste reformation if not dissolution.
